I mean, not the biggest fan, but come on. 30+ years ago, just celebrated 25 years of marriage.

I think they have to get rid of Berhalter soon.
A lot because they can't pick Berhalter over Reyna, right or wrong.

Re: next soccer question
That is some absolute petty shit by the Reyna fam.
Fuck that.

Some daddy ball, travel baseball type of shit. Small-minded organization, again.

Totally.
That's just disappointing.

Can't forget how high up his parents made it in soccer, too, even today. Reeks of privilege.NewtonHawk11 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 04, 2023 12:34 pm Some daddy ball, travel baseball type of shit. Small-minded organization, again.

I think you stomp this out early so that the Reyna family, Gio included, need to reprioritize their place in USA soccer.
The Reyna's shouldn't dictate the future.
My guess is Gio was being a bitch before/during camp/training and Berhalter saw no choice but to discipline - which he needs to be able to do.

Re: next soccer question
Players over coaches, especially in soccer. Especially on a national team when the coaches don't have a lot of time with the players.

Re: next soccer question
There's a balance to be sought, for sure. But 50/50 it ain't. Part of the national team coach's job is recruiting/retention.

I mean, this story opens up a huge can of worms for societal issues, club and "amateur" sports, and on and on.
Re: next soccer question
Players over coaches generally but this doesn't seem like an instance of that.
If Gio isn't training well, and his parents are trying to strong arm an organization so their son can play, I would consider that over stepping - and Gio can be replaced.

Re: next soccer question
Does this have any effect on Reyna's position as Sporting Director at Austin FC?
Re: next soccer question
I can't imagine he's well liked in the locker room.
Re: next soccer question
I used to coach “select” U12 when I was in college. Kids were great. Parents were the worst. I quit because of the parents.
And select in Lawrence was just a minor bump in talent but was more a way to it for cost more. I can’t imagine how the parents were/are at even higher levels.
But it’s that still can exist at THIS level.

Re: next soccer question
Gio seemed to have quite a bit of support from his teammates when the original public dust up with Berhalter happened a few weeks back. Probably a lot of players that also grew up with helicopter teammates.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Wed Jan 04, 2023 8:38 pmI can't imagine he's well liked in the locker room.
It was interesting to learn from Twellman yesterday that the Berhalter couple and Reyna couple have been best friends for a long time. Makes me wonder if the roles weren't reversed that the Berhalters would do the exact same thing.
The whole story of how Berhalter even got the job reeks in the same kind of privilege that the Reynas are displaying now.
Twellman kept saying yesterday "shows the state of US Soccer." This all just sure makes it seem like the awful parents I see at places here in KC on Saturdays are prevalent throughout the soccer community, they are running things (b/c youth soccer is for rich people), and are getting all the way to the top. And then fans are left wondering why the USMNT are miles away from being a contender.

Re: next soccer question
i know there’s definitely the appearance of youth soccer in the US being for rich kids, and that may even be true the majority of the time
but, my niece and nephew are solidly middle class and played on club and school teams while living in belton and lee’s summit. those teams were hardly made up of rich kids

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Were your siblings running the league, making the money off of it?KUTradition wrote: ↑Thu Jan 05, 2023 8:25 am i know there’s definitely the appearance of youth soccer in the US being for rich kids, and that may even be true the majority of the time

There are also several different levels. The Sporting KC leagues here are the biggest, and in the higher competition ones, a single tournament is unaffordable for a lot of people, especially lower class which has access to other sports. I roll my eyes at my own sibling at the amount that is spent on travel alone, let alone all the other stuff with gear and dues. It’s a huge problem and not getting better.
