An ironic thing about this, is that based off political and religious affiliations, many of those people who think an individual with a respiratory pathogen is under absolutely no moral obligation to take any measure to prevent its spread were the same people who in the 1990s had me terrified of STIs. They had me convinced that HPV, crabs, or gonorrhea would ruin my life, make me forever unfuckable, and permanently ostracized from society for my sinful and wreckless behavior and that absolute abstinence was the only appropriate course of action. But, today, the inalienable right to cough on someone cannot be infringed upon.

JFish, you can live in your fantasy world. It reminds me this dude I saw at Trader Joes last week who put his 2 year old girl in a mask. Some customers were looking at this guy wondering what the hell he was thinking. Poor girl, gonna grow up with that kind of ignorant parent. As Leana Wen pointed out, masks harmed her child's speech development. They are not completely free of risks, although far safer than the vaccine. But totally unnecessary and useless. Children are at almost no risk from covid.

The thing about this post, which sort of gives away the entire game, is that...it's a response to me pointing out the actual purpose of masks, and features our resident survivalist cosplayer going back to the "masks are to protect the wearer" well. Which, of, course, is dry. Because it's a five-foot-deep well made in the floor of the middle of a ten-story building.

Meaning that well is exactly as deep as the thoughts of said resident survivalist cosplayer.

I'm starting to believe those who have them are less intelligent than those who do not. All the evidence you need is in this thread. Something about common sense completely disappears when people become "experts".

When reasonable people say masks work - because they DO work - it is because masks are pretty good (remarkably good, really, given the costs involved) at preventing Person A from getting Person B sick. Any incremental preventive benefit to Person A is a plus, but Person A's health is simply not the point.

I think this is too simplistic in that the mask type and fit matter greatly.

Moreover, as practiced in this country (and as encouraged aggressively by the aforementioned public health bureaucracy), masking took account of neither quality nor fit.

In a controlled setting, I think there is no question that PROPER masking has an impact. In reality, masking was/is little more than hygiene theater.

I wouldn't take it that far. But I would say people with degrees can seem less likely to think outside the box. Or assume everything they learn in their field is 100 percent correct. Which is false. Science is constantly evolving. Sometimes what we thought was correct we later learned was missing variables

At the end of the day you are paying to be certified with a degree, which is mainly about memorizing information. Doesnt mean your IQ is going up

Sure.

I believe there are people whose genuinely-held religious beliefs inform - even dictate - their views on political and cultural issues.

I also believe that those people are, with frightening effectiveness and frequency, grossly manipulated and taken advantage of for the personal benefit of those who do not actually share anything remotely close to those beliefs (or even the basic values underpinning them).

And I also believe that, in many many many cases, that "personal benefit" is, ultimately, entrenchment of minority rule.

My son had covid in July of this year. Got over it in 2 days, and faster than I got over it. My son never wears a mask.

Or... maybe it had something to do with parenting? We haven't protected our child from going out and doing normal things. We also made sure he has his vitamins. It could have just been better genes.
