And, I will add, (1) being good with it presumes there was NOT a different policy already out there, and (2) if there is NOT a different policy out there, then the NFL needs to back up its actions here by MAKING this the rule going forward.jfish26 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 06, 2023 11:15 amYeah, I just don't agree that the particular uniqueness of the situation should really bear on how it should be resolved. What would have happened if, like, twenty members of the Bills and Bengals got quarantined for Ebola exposure from Monday-Wednesday? Whatever would have happened there is what should have happened here.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Fri Jan 06, 2023 11:09 amBut less of a backdoor win than Chiefs getting 1-seed and HFA because NFL decided not to reschedule the game.jfish26 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 06, 2023 10:52 am
Eh, getting the 1 (and the easier route that goes with it) at the "cost" of a single possible AFC championship matchup being at a neutral site (rather than at home), as a result of a dude dying (temporarily at least), is very much a backdoor win. Would put some of Bill's streak-preserving luck to shame.
But just because it's a bit of a windfall doesn't make it wrong.
What I think is wrong is doing something different here than what you'd do if the game was canceled (on a "no fault" basis) for any other reason. And I think that's what's happening here, no matter what someone might say to the contrary. Show me the policy - even in draft form, from Covid - that supports this approach. I don't think there is one.
The neutral site seems like their attempt to get it closer to "fair," but I do agree with you it seems unplanned. But, I don't agree that it's contrary to any written rule or any precedent. It's a unique situation. And timing is part of it--the game would be made up if it were Week 7.
If god's honest truth is that this is exactly what would have happened, I'm good.

Re: NFL 2022
It is hard to escape it, though. I have no sympathy for anyone if a team doesn't have enough players to play because they all have COVID and have a mandatory sit-out. Like Baylor in 2021. Were that the situation, I'd be holding middle fingers up to the Bills because the NFL should absolutely not consider rescheduling a game if it were canceled because of that.jfish26 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 06, 2023 11:15 amYeah, I just don't agree that the particular uniqueness of the situation should really bear on how it should be resolved. Great news. And lawyerly arguments. Let me say this about conspiracy thinking: conspiracies are the way leagues function when rules do not exist or are ignored. Forward progress negates the sack and fumble recovery sometimes.

Thread, if the horse hasn't been beaten to death:
Re: NFL 2022
Whatever "advantage" KC will gain will be nullified by whatever uptick their competitor will receive in their desire to "right the wrong". There are goods and bads to every possible option in this for the Chiefs once it became clear that the game could not be continued and then even further complicated by a decision not to resume the game. KC, CIN and BUF all would have been better off if the game played out without the injury but that didn't happen.
Much ado about nothing in the scheme of things. KC will either make enough plays to advance or they won't. Same with Buffalo and Cincinnati.
Just glad to hear that Hamlin is continuing to improve and is aware and able to interact with his surroundings and other people. Pretty remarkable what medical advancements can do for someone these days.
Re: NFL 2022
If we are bringing probability statistics into the argument, the Bengals had a 63% chance of winning against the Bills according to Vegas odds when the game was stopped.
The Chiefs had, at that moment, a little over a 59% chance at getting the 1 seed. The Bills 34%. The Bengals 6%.

Re: NFL 2022
Bengals EVP says what I think I’m thinking:
“The proper process for making rule change is in the off-season," Blackburn wrote. "It is not appropriate to put teams in a position to vote for something that may introduce bias, favor one team over another or impact their own situation when the vote takes place immediately before the playoffs."
Just to be clear, as the rules were written, the Chiefs would be the 1 seed with a win tomorrow meaning home field advantage throughout. It changed.
The Chiefs abstained from voting on the proposed AFC playoff changes, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, with the thinking that teams directly impacted by the changes should not vote due to bias.
Zac Taylor and the Bengals pissed that they didn’t just follow the existing rule book:
"It's black and white, it's in the rule book."

If the Chiefs play the Bills, where will the AFC Championship game be played? Seems Detroit and Indianapolis are not available.
Does the game need to be played in a dome? I say play it in Chicago!

Rams thinking about firing McVay. What a fickle league.
Re: NFL 2022
They should do an assessment of the available coaching talent and then ask McVay what they can do to help him get it cleaned up.
Re: NFL 2022
Every coach looks like shit when the guy who played like a Hall of Famer for you the previous season comes in the next season and is a broken down mess. He knows what he's doing. He just couldn't navigate the beat up roster they had. Some coaches just aren't as good at dealing with unexpected players at important spots. It's a coaching skill as important as calling plays. Their skill at handling different players and their unique talents is part of what I love about both Bill Self and Andy Reid.
A golden era of KC area sports indeed.

Lawrence is too much youthful energy and physical strength and not enough calm, experienced touch. Just too much.
Super talented, though. Looks like he is headed towards at least some of what looked possible for him coming out of Clemson.
