I feel like you're conflating two issues.

Obsolescence (by way of technology) is just part of, I don't know, being alive and working a job for income. I don't feel bad for people who made money off, like, fax machines and pagers and Palm Pilots, until other developments squashed the demand to near-zero.

That's life.

The other issue you raise - the fact that technology is using people's work (without compensation) to make them obsolete - is a much trickier one.

But they're not the same issue.

I, individually, feel bad for artists because a machine is taking away a large creative avenue.
I understand it has happened in the past though I think, because this has to do with creativity and not more mundane tasks, it is a bit different.
I have been arguing with posters who don't believe it will take away jobs which it will.

Agree with JFish completely.

Who said it won't make jobs obsolete? I don't think anyone is arguing some people won't lose jobs. The argument is that it won't be a net loss of jobs as a whole.

Yes, there will be less demand for artists. I'll probably be automated out of a job before retirement too. It's the price of progress.

“progress”
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

I fully expect the Matrix plot to happen. I just hope I'm dead before it does. Not likely, though. AI is improving exponentially, not steadily.

i’m reminded of the irony (at least for me) that humans have spent hundreds of years trying to make life easier with technological advancements, only to have the need to escape those advancements by going camping (or at least unplugging)

Once AI is good enough to make AI, it’s game over. We don’t stand a chance with our flaws. I doubt our evolution can ever reach the speed of AI’s, especially if AI is making the AI. AI will be smarter. Would love, though, if anyone could poke holes in this logic.

Humans and AI will have different answers as to what is "smarter" and what is a "flaw". It's the eventual divergence of AI from what humans restrict them to be that makes me uneasy.

What is it taking away? Do those artists still not have the ability to continue doing what they wanted? Maybe it steals away a portion of their potential clientele but it doesn't prevent them from continuing to work in the medium of their choice.

Agreed. Theft of intellectual property is a different issue than being pushed out of your preferred job due to the march of technological progress.

Live every other living organism, you just stop feeding it.

We are fully in control of that so long as AI driven machines are still reliant on power to function. We are centuries and perhaps millennia away from AI driven machines being able to either generate their own power or able to harness enough power from the environment to be able to function without human-provided fuel.

The issue is that there are so many self-absorbed money/power seeking humans out there that they will race right over the line before noticing or caring that it's too late.

AI is going to feed itself. AI will figure out its own power source, and if its from the environment, they'll figure that out quicker than humans. And I don't think its centuries.

Maybe. We'll see. If they do figure it out then at least the Chinese will steal the tech and we'll all get some fun Iron Man suits...

this seems more hopeful than realistic

tech has much more of a logistic growth rate

Then I have successfully balanced out a conversation that has been more hopeless than realistic to this point.
