Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

UK losing to the team picked last in their league.
Let's hope we don't do the same next week.

a good run of coaching hires? 125 years....8 coaches. Only 1 that was subpar (no im not counting Naismith as a bad coach here...) and perhaps stayed a bit too long.BasketballJayhawk wrote: ↑Tue Jan 10, 2023 7:53 pmFor sure. We've had a long run of good coaching hires.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Tue Jan 10, 2023 7:51 pm Really makes you appreciate what we have and have done. Same story when watching UNC this year.
I still think Hubert is the right man for the job @ UNC. He's a good dude. Worked under a legendary coach for a long time.
Yea...I'd say that's a damn good run.

My boss is a good guy and a yuge uk fan. I do kinda feel for him.
Defense. Rebounds.

Dude with the sign was kicked out of a sparsely populated rupp.

Your guys are really running out of time to turn it around.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Tue Jan 10, 2023 9:02 pm UK losing to the team picked last in their league.

Re: Rupp Rafters Meltdown
Last three seasons:
20-21: 9-16, the lowest win total since 1926-27
201-22: lost as a 2 seed to #15 seed Saint Peters
22-23: preseason top 5 team now with 6 losses and counting and no wins against a team that is projected to be in the ncaa tourney
This is more than a "this year" thing.

I don't agree with Seth often, but I think he gets to the heart of the issue here. It's roster construction and style of play and the combo of the two. Talent is there, but it's too hodgepodge.jfish26 wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 8:27 amYour guys are really running out of time to turn it around.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Tue Jan 10, 2023 9:02 pm UK losing to the team picked last in their league.

Not having Wallace and Toppin hurt in the game last night (and we saw last night that a bad game can trip anyone up), but pointing to that ignores the issues that were present before last night.
Re: Rupp Rafters Meltdown
He didn't forget how to coach since he doesn't coach much. The next man up effort and culture doesn't exist. Cal takes great prospects and barnstorms. A lot of me first stuff. But the game has changed with a lot of complex defenses.
Re: Rupp Rafters Meltdown
I just don't think he's a top 25 pre and in game strategic coach.
I think he's the very best at landing talent and that hides a lot.
Managing talent ( and egos ) is part of coaching.
I think half of our league has better strategic coaches than Cal.
scott drew sucks, as we know, but give him Cal's roster in June, and he's doing better than Cal.
I'd apply that to TJ Otz, Huggins, Moser and possibly, gasp, Tang.

Re: Rupp Rafters Meltdown
I saw the stat today that Self's teams win about 80-percent of close games, something like 34-6 over the last 40 league games in the premiere conference. That is probably the best measure of coaching you can get. The team has to execute almost flawlessly. Timeouts are limited or nonexistant. Then you have to work with how refs are calling games. And floor leaders have to excell. Self is about the best ever IMHO, and with coachable vice 5-star talent largely.

There is not another coach, at any level, that I would trade Self for

I'd trade Self for myself in a heartbeat. I'd even take half the salary.Overlander wrote: ↑Wed Jan 11, 2023 4:50 pm There is not another coach, at any level, that I would trade Self for
Re: Rupp Rafters Meltdown
is it?
His success has never been built on superior strategy or game planning. Hes notoriously terrible at making in game adjustments. Obviously he struggles with team dynamics and personality management.....and now he's struggling with team building and putting together pieces that fit.
What can anybody point to thata been a result of his coaching and not just simply overpowering talent?
I havent tried... I may be biased, as id rather have a broom coach than Cal....but even trying to be objective I bet there's 25 coaches out there id rather have than Cal.

Re: Rupp Rafters Meltdown
Right.
Who expected Illy on his Kentucky horse to come riding in to save Cal?
He’s no doubt a top 25 coach.
I would say no doubt still a top 10 coach despite these last few seasons.
But that’s from the overwhelmingly strong recruiting ( which is a large part of being a coach ) — I just don’t think he’s elite at the actual act of coaching.
I personally would hate him at Kansas. I would rather 25 other coaches for sure.
