Finding New Shit on TV
Re: Finding New Shit on TV
I wonder how much of a growing depression problem comes from factors like technology doing more and more for us (when, I agree, a sense of worth can come from accomplishing things!)TDub wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 11:57 am How long before my fridge and slow cooker are subscription based packages?
also....saves you time....to do...what? surf the internet more? eat more popcorn?
I also think there is a sense of accomplishment when tasks (even simple, mindless tasks) are completed that give people a sense of worth. I did that...I accomplished that. Even simple things build character, confidence and self value. If we rely on technology for every step of the process how much of that goes away? How much of our growing depression problem is centered around people feeling like they have no self worth.
It may be stupid....but mow the lawn, change a tire.....they are all things that, especially young people, need to grow skills, problem solving abilities and help with accomplishment/confidence.
versus depression problems coming from things like the commercialization and monetization of abso-fucking-lutely everything (see your comment on subscriptions to use your fridge)

You can use the stuff, or not, not sure I could care less. Just seems like a choice to get triggered and annoyed by it or at people that use it on their own time in their own homes.TDub wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 11:57 am How long before my fridge and slow cooker are subscription based packages?

But then to judge people's character off of it? That's just a MICH move.
Re: Finding New Shit on TV
im clearly stating its an opinion, my opinion. Im not "triggered" by it (another new trend I dislike). Simply stating I dont like it. My point about character is being around young people its fun watching their joy in accomplishing things by themselves, and teaching them to be able to accomplishing things by themselves. My point about character is that struggling to do things, working through issues, working on scheduling and time management are all important character building opportunities.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 12:10 pmYou can use the stuff, or not, not sure I could care less. Im not saying if you have a wifi fridge you have no character or bad character. That's you misinterpreting my end of the discussion.
I thought discussing things on.....a discussion message board...was kinda what we did here. Apologies for disagreeing with the consensus and fighting your progress.....

At the risk of agreeing with you.......I think its not unreasonable to say its a combination of many things...but those two things I believe certainly play a roll.ousdahl wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 12:09 pmI wonder how much of a growing depression problem comes from factors like technology doing more and more for us (when, I agree, a sense of worth can come from accomplishing things!)TDub wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 11:57 am How long before my fridge and slow cooker are subscription based packages?

I do agree with the idea of things like: learn how to count change back and then use tech for the easy answer after you know how to do it, etc., there's a big list here we could come up with. I'm with you on that.TDub wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 12:28 pmim clearly stating its an opinion, my opinion. Im not "triggered" by it (another new trend I dislike). Simply stating I dont like it. I think using tech to save time and money makes the tech worthwhile and doesn't say anything about anyone. And, of course, people can utilize it or not. Except cruise control. That shit should be mandated. Also, stop writing checks at the grocery store.
Re: Finding New Shit on TV
I sort of agree with the use it or dont sentiment.....except an increasing number of items require it to function. I think thats beyond dumb.

I think there's enough fellow millennials in particular to appreciate this, but:
remember when our grade school math teachers told us we had to show our work cuz it's not like we're gonna end up with calculators in our pockets everywhere we go?

Re: Finding New Shit on TV
heck, remember those Texas Instruments calculators we had to buy that cost damn near as much as a smart phone anyway?
go figure the number one most useful function on those things was 8008135
actually, do math classes still require students to buy those things?

The fact that I find something over the top and unnecessary and then posting about it on a message bored != triggered.
I would never get a Peleton. Or a wifi slow cooker. Not for me.
If you want to use that stuff, go for it.

Up to 99% on Rotten Tomatoes!
Re: Finding New Shit on TV
they were only like $80.....and they can do a lot more than your phone can. Including calculus equations and graphing capabilities.ousdahl wrote: ↑Wed Jan 18, 2023 12:46 pm heck, remember those Texas Instruments calculators we had to buy that cost damn near as much as a smart phone anyway?

or maybe your phone can do that....I dunno.

i also remember when it got stolen…asshole

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Re: Finding New Shit on TV
I hate that the TI-83 and above was/is a required purchase. Stressed out a lot of public school parents.
Re: Finding New Shit on TV
yea, I recall that too.
Surely there had to be some sorta assistance program for those who needed it? Maybe? Hopefully?
In a sense I guess it's turning even math class into yet another subscription-based service of sorts.

Re: Finding New Shit on TV
pols bored alert: my cynical self thought, I wonder if Texas Instruments lobbies lawmakers or school boreds or whatever to make it so every student has to buy their own calculator (rather than, say, schools just providing it, especially since like 99% of students will never use them again after completing a select few classes)
and, without necessarily digging that deep, a cursory search yields the question:
why exactly does a calculator company have its own political action committee?
(...besides the plainly stated objective of "contributions to political candidates based on several criteria including candidates’ voting records and positions that align with TI’s business priorities...")
