Man.

You know no one cares and nothing matters any more when even twocoach and illy are starting to question capitalism.

Ah, the good old days when to save money, you'd have cereal or eggs for lunch or dinner. Now companies get a whiff of record profits and continue to jack their prices up.
i’d wager last summer’s gas prices, and ‘muricans willingness to pay them (aka continued level of demand), is why they’re still high
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

But, tell ya what. Let’s be glass half full!

If even twocoach and illy can question capitalism, maybe there’s hope that maybe some folks still care, and their might be things that still matter.

Regarding demand, it’s not like we’re dealing with discretionary purchases and luxury items here.

It’s gas (energy needed for transport and heating and such) and eggs (required sustenance, no matter what the Wall Street journal tells you)

Is it that Mericans are willing to pay, or have no other choice?

(Besides maybe some Qusdahl shit questioning just what the eff things like “free markets” really are)

Price gouging is bad. But it's a reality.

And how do we prevent this type of price gouging as consumers? Don't buy their eggs at that price. Even better, don't buy their products ever again. Brand reputation matters.

Either way, I am glad you're at least looking into the "why" and not just lighting your hair on fire by trigger words/phrases like "record profits".

Driving a car and eating eggs are discretionary or luxury purchases in my opinion.

There are thousands of alternatives to eggs to consume as food.

This idea that everyone "needs" to drive a car is ridiculous. And unsustainable for our planet.

I don't think the government is the method to fix that problem of price gouging. You can use aspects of capitalism to fix it or at the very least prevent it.

buy 3 chickens....it takes near nothing to keep them. Eat 3 eggs a day for about $6 a month in food. Or less if you supplement with your kitchen scraps. Voila, luxury eggs at your disposal.

I realize that's not possible for some.

My larger point being, our society being a slave to convenience and relying entirely on corporations to provide essentials is the root cause for why we see price gouging opportunities.

Exactly.

And the "need" to always have someone else "fix" the "problem".

Some day.

But for now, in this rental market?

My landlord would get so pissed.

Plus, it was -15 here this morning. Plus the wild animals. I know measures to prevent freezing and predation can be taken, but it still seems like a lotta effort.

And I’d honestly make the effort, but for the landlord thing.

Or, the root cause for why we see price gouging opportunities is insisting on a for-profit economic model.

Jfc.

How do we decide who gets the easy jobs when everything becomes free and nobody has any incentive to work hard?

The root cause for price gouging is lack of competition and lazy consumers.

Most people don’t have the discretion of not driving a car, especially the way we have organized our cities and suburbs. However, eggs are definitely discretionary. No one’s “life-as-they-know-it” would be altered if they didn’t eat eggs. A vast majority would not be able to support themselves if were unable to drive to a job.

Legs. Bikes. Trains. Buses. Ubers/ride sharing/car pooling.

There are alternatives in the vast majority of situations. Especially in the cities and suburbs.

Driving a personal vehicle is not required for life no matter how much easier it makes things.

because nobody gouges in a bartering society?

this take is so repetitive and tired and plain wrong. But.....keep banging your hammer ous. its your thing. Bang the hammer, hear the ding, get the endorphins of likes and then carry on with your day with nothing done to further your cause and repeat.

For someone who complains about their landlord so much, and has the free time to be here almost every single work day, and who also owns a vehicle, it sure seems awfully obvious you should move to a more affordable area to live in where you can own a home.

There are decent houses in cities/towns within 100 miles of where I live for $50,000 or less. And I am sure with all the help wanted signs that I see that you could find some work to help fill the financial gaps until you found permanent work doing something.

Or keep doing the "but bruh, capitalism is the root cause of all evils, we should all work for free and share everything".

Something tells me if that were to happen and you were assigned one of the hard labor intensive jobs that suddenly your outlook on how fair that setup is would change.

There has to be incentive to work or nothing gets done. It's a proven economic theory. Incentives matter. Choices matter.
