I am not a lawyer, but I am aware of the sports celebrity exception. Good thing George Santos was a great volleyball player too.

Opposing team fans should refuse to attend 'Bama's road games.

When I first read that I agreed but then quickly realized it punishes their own players more than it punishes Bama's.
Opposing team fans should go to the games and boo the shit out of Bama - and Oats.

The first part is probably hard to prove. He didn't give the person the gun, someone else did (who has been charged iirc). It doesn't sound like there are any texts from him (the player still on the team) after dude texting asking for the gun. While it seems fairly likely to me that he knew what was possibly going to occur, proving that in regard to a criminal charge may not be possible. Or he is cooperating enough with the police/authorities that they gave him a pass?

The 2nd part isn't as clear. This happened in public from what I understand. Obviously he didn't "block their getaway" in a criminal fashion. In fact, from what I have read there wasn't much of a getaway attempt it was more of a shootout...remember, the boyfriend of the girl who was killed also had a gun and was returning fire.

(It's absolutely insane that there's anything to even parse here. But that's a TAKE IT TO THE POLITICS BORED issue.)

Gutter has been on a great roll. This is a good suggestion. But many are mostly willing to forego a trip to Tuscaloosa. Except fans of UT and OU who wanted the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the SEC, shootings and all. Apparently missed the pre-death penalty days of Baylor.

5 thoughts for a Friday in late February......

I predict KU plays a team coached by Dusty May in the tournament.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know, they don't play anybody but.....
Is Randy Bennett one of the most underrated coaches in college basketball?

When was the last time the #1 team in the country played in the Final Four in their home city?

UNC was pre-season #1. They are currently unranked. They are currently 17-11. If they are 19-14 and 10-10 in conference (win 1 of their last 3 regular season games and go 1-1 in the NCAA Tournament) do they make the NCAA Tournament? I say yes.

Last night Northwestern was up 52 - 36 on Illinois with 11:11 left to play in the game.
Illinois outscored them 30-10 the rest of the game.
I have one word - JUNK!

I think UNC has to win three more which would likely give them ONE quad 1 win.

So two of three in the regular season or two in the tournament.

You can’t just beat lowly Florida State and beat a team similar to them in the ACC tournament and call it good.

UNC in the NCAA Tournament = > $ than let's say some squad such as..... Utah State
Is that a factor in the committee's decision and/or would they admit to it?

UNC is 47th in NET right now.
They are fighting your Oklahoma State's, Wisconsin's, Penn State's - all in that 40-50 range in NET.
With a win @ Florida State ( which won't help much at all ) and a win v Duke or UVA, i'd bet they'd rise to high 40's and the committee will do all they can to get UNC in.

Is it really significantly more money? From ticket sales? What else? That's only 1 game worth of ticket sales most likely. Maybe 2 if they pull off an upset in game 1.

Agreed. I don't think UNC gets in without 2 Q1 wins prior to the tourney.

TV numbers.
Participation in betting.
There are a lot of UNC fans - and many BWW Chad's who love them UNC bc of Michael Jordan.

If you get the UNC fans to watch day 1 of the tournament? That alone is a lot of potential revenue.

I doubt it. The TV rights are already paid for so it's not like the ncaa makes more money from that. It would just be in ticket sales at whatever first round game UNC gets put in and I doubt the additional UNC fans who want to go watch them get waxed their first game would be enough that the ncaa is pressing to get them in the tourney. The whole "(name the institution) is rigged" thing is getting beaten to death these days.

Viewership of the tournament ( along with online activity and related conversion ) dictates future ad revenue which dictates future television contracts.
UNC in the tournament is absolutely more valuable than a Utah State.

The TV network isn't going to pay a bigger chunk of money after the fact based on their ratings. Their contract is set. I get the whole "any eyes on TVs are good" thing but then you have to factor in the number of people who refuse to watch because of the blatant favoritism of giving an unworthy blue blood the spot. As KU fans know, there are way more fans collectively cheering against the blue bloods than there are fans of those individual teams cheering for them.

The ncaa isn't making more money based on betting volume so I don't see what that has to do with anything.

Is the TV deal $$$ dependent on viewing numbers from an NCAA perspective? I thought Turner/CBS paid big money for that upfront. Locked in through 2032.

Does the NCAA have any financial interest in any betting institutions/casinos? Otherwise, not sure how that increases their money.

I get the "fan interest" aspect. Just not sure how it is actually monetized other than ticket sales.
