Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Are you not a fan of veterans and first responders?

Why is it dumb if they are his favorite?

Me personally, I am not going to let the fact that the "maga" crowd has latched onto some of these groups cause me to stop vocally appreciating things like our veterans and first responders.

I don't think everything needs to become political and adversarial.

who do you think that malcontent is going to call when his house catches fire.

who do you think that knowitall is going to call when his home is broken into in the middle of the night.

Why would that bother you? Just curious.
I’m just so tired of how much everything we do in this country has to be about “honoring the military.” A few things about it bother me:

(1) there’s always this guilt trip about “never forget” when it’s literally every sports event and political speech in this country. Hell, if I did forget, I couldn’t make it a full day without being reminded.
(2) We’ll do everything to “honor” these people as a country except put some money into housing and health care for them. How about doing something besides dragging a 300 foot flag across a football field every Sunday that actually honors somebody?
(3) I can’t stand how we raise up the military (and cops) at every opportunity as if they’re the only people whose jobs contribute to the good of the country. As much as the rhetoric lays on the guilt, it also makes it really easy to think a perfunctory act like taking off your hat during the national anthem counts as honoring public servants and lets you go about your self-centered life. I think our society would benefit from asking and recognizing how every job should be making the country better.
The NFL ALWAYS does this. And it always feels like it's a lot less about actually honoring the military and more about honoring the NFL for being so great as to honor the military.

It's like when a grocery store starts charging money for using plastic bags by pretending they're single-handedly saving the environment, when you damn well it was a financial decision.
I only came to kick some ass...

Rock the fucking house and kick some ass.

The logic here is…falling for the straw man that some folks want you to.

I’m not saying anything negative toward law enforcement, first responders or the military. What I’m negative toward is the performative, virtue-signaling, coded worship of the same (and, again, this is made clear in the letter to the editor in question, by its reference to “border patrol”).

The most adorable part of the new terminal is definitely that there are massive growing pains for Kansas Citians to become unaccustomed to getting to simply wait curbside.

The old airport was great design for a populace who drove cars. Thankfully, the new design channels cars into a dangerous knot of congestion because cars are no longer a thing apparently. Honestly, if they would have built a wider TSA entry point, the old terminals were ingenius.

The NFL does the honoring the military stuff to keep that portion of the fan base happy.

Then the NFL is complicit in perpetuating the brain rot.

Kansas City got incredibly unlucky with the old terminal design. You should look it up, if you don't know the timeline. It would be like if, tomorrow, something happened with air travel and all runways needed to be 5x as long as the runways at KCI are.

I know that post-9-11 was terrible for the gate baggage claims and amenities. But not well thought out. The new terminal takes all the bad parts of every other terminal to KC. Reminds me of a stupider San Antonio airport with only one terminal.

9/11 additional security and gate baggage handling stopped is referenced everywhere. As well as few amenities inside the TSA areas. But I loved the simple layout and convenience of the older terminals. The new airport, even with welded saxophone birds, reminds me of something of a half measure. Not as bad as Denver's faddish features. But, less than the old to me. The old terminals were plagued by not being renovated for more gate space post 9/11. The TWA fiasco and huge passenger plane era had passed. I flat out loved its convenience for air travel. But an all glass pleasure dome in tornado alley has an appeal all its own. Moot however.

I used to be First Team All-KCI. Without checking a bag, and with any number of options (SWA Fly-By; TSA Pre-Check; etc.) you really could do curb-to-gate in five minutes, which is glorious.

But I have grown very tired of constantly apologizing for the airport. To business partners, to family, to friends, whatever.

It simply was not an airport that serious cities have. And Kansas City is a serious city, and is having its ten-year moment. I've very much come around to seeing the airport as something that delivers a tone-setting first impression - and it was beyond time for that first impression to be a plus, not a minus.

Put differently, the old terminals were for a time when Kansas City was something of a hidden gem. A place that had, I don't know, 75% of the amenities of a serious city for, I don't know, 40% of the cost. Things like the airport design, or even the speak-it-into-existence-Soccer-Capital-of-America thing, were part of our feisty provincialism. Adorable, really.

But we're the dog that caught the car. We wanted to be a serious city, and here we are. Time to grow up, kids.

I haven't flown in or out of KC for a long time. I do remember it being the most convenient airport I've ever been in. It's not a hub, they tried but it failed. So no, there weren't decent restaurants or shops, there was no one to go to them. I never ate there but I'm told Bryant's was an embarrassment to the city. It went belly up, probably a good thing. Doesn't matter, plane to baggage pick up was about 100 ft. Then 30 feet and you're out. It was beautiful.

There were some terrific ideas embedded in the old airport. I wish it had been updated and not razed.

There wasn't a practical path to updating it, not in such a fashion as would accommodate Kansas City being any busier than it is right now.* It would have been good money after bad.

* I do believe Southwest when it changed its tune and said that KCI was going to start losing flights absent construction of a modern terminal.

I understand that DFW was the giant sized copy of KCI. The thing I loved about it was the concept of getting the Hell out as fast as possible. It created a generation of us who liked that concept. The new one is almost a destination in iteslf. Had to be done, I get that. But damn. I also liked Old Yeller.
