The point is even in a prison. Literally the most controlled environment man provides, bad people still find ways to do bad things. Inmates killing other inmates still happens all the time. Once again violence is the root issue
(For what it’s worth, even in the fantasy land you have concocted to make yourself feel better about being pro (or at least not-anti) kid slaughter, “violence” is no more the “root issue” than guns; you should really be pointing to “moral decline” or what the fuck ever as what causes “violence.” But whatever.)

Even if we agree that at some level, evil is inevitable, wouldn’t it be LESS BAD if that evil was expressed with…nearly anything as accessible as assault rifles, that isn’t assault rifles?

I don’t think you’re going to see the would-be mass murderers becoming, like, expert chemists or some shit. “If you ban assault rifles, the killers will turn to dirty nukes,” is just a very silly thing to say.

If some lunatic is going to attack your* kids’ school, wouldn’t you rather that lunatic have a handgun or knife? Pretty much anything but an assault rifle?

* I’m guessing you don’t have kids - if you do, your ridiculous prioritization of the right to buy/own/use toys despite the obvious cost in kid blood…gets even grosser.

When has attempting to ban anything out of existence ever worked in this country?

I suggest you might want to ask MTG. Before or after you also ask her about gun laws.
Maybe it's just me but it seems it's not too smart to argue that ban/restriction laws don't work when also trying to get people to support ban/restriction laws she's in favor of - that historically haven't worked.

Is anyone serious talking about banning guns? Or just, you know, a particular type of gun whose utility/necessity does not justify its harms?

This is such a brainless way of looking at things. You don't make laws covering things people don't do. If laws that don't stop the covered action immediately, everywhere, should be tossed...then there won't be laws.

tons (LITERALLY) of drugs get stopped at the border

so, yeah, i’d say the laws have had an impact

imagine the lives that were saved from overdoses by those border confiscations
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Gun bans have happened many times in many places throughout the world. Guns are banned in many places here in the US, and yes many people do not want the public to have access to any guns.

Which is why its important not to give them any "stepping stones" to a gun ban

There are drugs in every city in this country. And the drug trade is far more violent and less traceable than it would be if we just straight up allowed legal drug purchasing

...But many attentive residents of legalized states know that this promise hasn’t panned out. Cannabis’ illegal market is anything but dying; in some cases, it’s more active than it has been in years.

Take California for example: first in the nation to legalize the medical use of the drug in 1996, the state would go on to legalize recreational use in 2016. But in just the past year, the state reported several massive illegal cannabis busts, with 20 tons of cannabis confiscated off a series of farms, $8 million worth of plants found in a thought-abandoned warehouse alongside a busy highway, and 100+ illegal operations busted in the southern town of Anza – just over the last three or four months.

What’s more, police reports suggest that arrests for pot crimes have increased following the drug’s legalization. Among such reports are a series of police records secured by the Los Angeles Times in early 2019 – compared to the rates of cannabis smuggling from before legalization was implemented, the documents suggest that arrests have risen as much as 166% since 1996...

How did these goalposts grow legs? It's a wonder, really.

Assault rifles (in many iterations) were banned. Recently! And democracy was not itself torn asunder (in fact, the trendline on the number of people shot/killed in mass shootings shot upward right when the ban expired by its terms; coincidence, I'm sure).

Thats a taxation issue. People already profiting off of illegal cannibas sells arent going to be inclined to start paying taxes on their profits. Especially when you look at the ridiculous amounts of fees and higher than average tax rates aimed at that industry

add to that, that during the assault rifle ban nobody was coming for “your” guns

We’re just so lost, where the gun lobby (which, just so we’re clear, is about profit not principle) has successfully convinced a meaningful chunk of the population that assault rifles are an essential part of individual liberty. That, but for the absolute right to buy/own/use assault rifles, we’re on the brink of falling to lefty dictatorship.
