Israel/Palestine
Re: Israel/Palestine
Yea.
While there isn’t necessarily a problem in itself with any ethnic nation, I’m not sure if any ethnic nation has ever existed without also meaning oppression of the non-ethnic/secular types.
Where’s that line supposed to be drawn?
And, in our freedom-and-democracy loving west, how do we reconcile ethnic (and/or religious) nations witu our founding fathers establishing a gummint that is (at least supposed to be) explicitly not that?

And not that mjl is willing to have a dialogue with me, but just in case he happens to see this:
If you want answers to your questions, do your own research. Go look up “Israelis oppressing Palestinians/Christians/non-Zionist Jews/etc” and it’s all out there, now documented about as well as “police brutalizing POC” is now documented in Merica.

Re: Israel/Palestine
it’s an anecdote, so grain of salt…Mjl wrote: ↑Thu Apr 27, 2023 11:39 am A plurality of Israeli Jews are secular. How are they discriminated against? Just that they have to serve in the military (which Arabs and ultra-orthodox Jews are allowed to but don't have to do)?
There are definitely some racist Israelis. There are racists in every country.
Non-Israelis are treated differently. Arab Israelis (Muslims, Christians, Druze) have full rights though.
but, i recently heard an interview with secular Israelis (both working in the sciences) that were so troubled/terrified of the current political direction that they were actively laying the groundwork for a “Plan B” exodus…even going so far as to secure citizenship in other countries. this was a mother and father that were being interviewed, but they indicated that theirs isn’t a unique story
i’ll see if i can find it, but it was about a week ago i heard it
i don’t think their objection was military service or anything like that, but rather active discrimination against them and their children
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?
Re: Israel/Palestine
I have friends there that are considering the same thing because of the politics there. They do fear that right wingers, due to their political allegiance to ultra-orthodox parties just because of how their parliamentary system works, will make it more of a religious nation.
But we're not there yet. Not to the point of anything I would consider discrimination.

Also, he's right. "Dedicated to the proposition..."

Re: Israel/Palestine
"Dedicated" is a strong word, it would indicate a singular focus. How about "predicated on the proposition".

I'm sure it has nothing to do with the Montana legislature being run by republicans...

This would be a "big fucking deal" if Joe can make it happen.
Hell, be bipartisan, ask Jared to help, he did great last time.
Re: Israel/Palestine
I thought this thread bump was gonna be about that Palestinian-American journalist who was killed by Israeli forces, and her family is accusing the US and Israeli gummints of dragging their feet about investigating, as reported by NPR this morning.
Re: Israel/Palestine
Normally I can't stand performative, meaningless votes by Congress. But I found this meaningful, especially on the Democratic side, where it shows that the ignorant and/or antisemitic ones are the (vocal) minority.
Re: Israel/Palestine
Umm
No offense bro, but I dunno if the issue of whether Israel is a racist apartheid state can be settled with a performative meaningless vote by congress
(Not that mjl will read this)
