Am I the only person on the planet who routinely considers "is my job at risk of being eliminated or replaced by a cheaper alternative?"
sure...and you can pretend this is the same thing if you want.
I was offered a decent pay bump to move over onto our Web/Mobile team to run their testing group but I declined the position because I fully believe that the vast majority of that job will be replaced by some form of AI testing prior to my retirement in 10-15 years. So I stayed in my current role that has virtually zero chance of such replacement as our systems are simply too massive and too complex.

Anyone who is a copywriter or some similar role that is ripe to be replaced by AI/automation would be fucking dumb to not see what's coming and should start preparing themselves for a career change ASAP.

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Harsh and very shitty and awful but true.

Don't know why we want ( well I know why = $$$$ ) computers to take over creative work for us that people enjoy doing but here we are.

It's called being aware of the obstacles that will affect your career path. Too many people start jobs because it's a job they can get and never take the time to think about if it's a job they can keep. Their inevitably shocked and offended when they find themselves backed into a corner and face losing their jobs.

As to the why? AI doesn't ask for benefits, days off or raises. It doesn't show up late complaining about home life and it doesn't ditch you for a rival company at the worst possible time.

Sorry, people. If "how easily replaceable am I right now" isn't a question you ask yourself at least quarterly then you just aren't fully prepared to stay employed for as long as you need to be.

Many people start jobs because it’s doing work they love. And no one expected the rise of AI taking these jobs when many of these people began their careers.

I can't imagine being me my freshman/sophomore year in college deciding whether I wanted to continue to pursue a career in design in fear of it becoming obsolete.

smh, I can't imagine being in that situation, either. Especially in light of the prevailing attitude when I was at that stage of life, where you were encouraged to find a "good co." to work for and eventually retire from it ~ 40-50 years later.

In some respects the increased mobility of jobs these days can be envied, but having your job or entire career replaced by a machine, not so much.

Not sorry to not be in the current job market. My heart goes out to those who are.

Having your job replaced by a machine could should would be a GOOD thing, but for being within a system that still mostly just prioritizes individual accumulation of wealth, over the basic needs of the world and its people.

That, or we can see all the “job creators” step up and invest their wealth in all sorts of new employment opportunities yet.

Well, sometimes the things you love in your 20s turn out to not be optimal careers or don't meet your changing needs once you get married and have kids. Life happens, things change. Adjust and advance or deal with the consequences.

I couldn't imagine all sorts of things when I was that age. It's called inexperience. As you live and learn, you'd better keep your head on a swivel and pay attention or you risk being screwed if you don't take preemptive action.

Certainly.
But that doesn't mean that this particular change ( A.I. ) isn't going to be shitty for a lot of people.
I mean a lot.

All change is shitty for someone. But that change is coming and it's being painted as a "get on board or get left behind" change.

"All change is shitty for someone"

No it's not.

And this hard ass "welp it's just the way it is, just get on board" stance is tiresome and conflicts with being upset about other negative changes - i.e. if say you are pro choice, and the Supreme Court made a ruling that changed things, and it you can see change in the future, are you upset, or are you twocoachy: "welp, that change is coming either get on board or get left behind".

Thankfully, my opinion is just mine and we live in a great country where other can have their own opinions and deal with the consequences themselves.

I have very personal feelings about having to move away from the career you loved and wanted into a career that will be stable and won't get eliminated by modernization so I certainly don't expect many others to feel the same as I do. No worries.

Sorry to be harsh but sometimes you have to be to motivate yourself from the "being sad about it" phase to the "doing something about it" phase that I had to put myself through.

I will fight having to use A.I. until I no longer can.
I'm sure that choice will be made for me i.e. Adobe will integrate it into all their tools and there won't be as good a set of tools without A.I. that I could choose from.
But i'll bitch and moan all along the way.
