Udeh probably found this out, saw that Self was likely going to play more mobile 4's, and there was no way he'd be getting any other minutes besides spelling Hunter "i'm so courageous" Dickinson.
I think Mgbako is the wildcard here.

Losing Udeh is a lot tougher than losing Zuby - much easier to find Zubies (?) than Udehs. I think Udeh was in line for a Thomas Robinson-type trajectory.

BUT - if we're really recruiting over him twice in the same offseason, including with a guy who is pretty sure to be here in 24-25...I get the decision to leave.

I also continue to think/hope that we're still in this weird transitional period, digesting BOTH money and freedom of movement changes all at once. I very much do think/hope that it won't be quite like this forever.

Yeah I think this means that Mgbako is a lock to come here. And like you mentioned as well Fish. I do think that some of this will definitely slow down and it won't be like this forever.

If I'm Bill I'm calling Zuby to see if he'd reconsider.

i know both guys showed potential, but i’m not sold on their success being a foregone conclusion…particularly where Zuby is concerned

i’m definitely curious to see the trajectory their careers take from here forward

Zuby is visiting San Diego St soon. He would absolutely kill it there. Versatile big man, defensive-first player and seems to have a decent offensive game.

I generally feel the same about Udeh leaving as I did about Ejiofor. Granted, Udeh had more of a role last year and was in line for a bigger role than Ejiofor over the next two, but with that much potential, you can't just be sitting around playing limited minutes for 3 years if there are better opportunities out there.

If you don't want your borderline 5-star big to leave, you can't go recruit a proven center who's going to play over him and lock down 30+ minutes per game for at least one year (and maybe two).

One of my first thoughts as well.

I wonder if that was addressed by staff prior to signing Hunter, and whether they know they’d loose both incumbent bigs remaining.

Cuz, yea, now we’re down to one actual big man. Prob gonna get ahold of one more..

This is going to be self-defeating.

Part of the appeal of college athletics is seeing guys grow over the years. You're going to lose fans with this approach, and are going to lose income, and lose the ability to buy top guys.

maybe

if this works and Bill gets another natty, then i don’t see most fans and money going anywhere

however, if this fails to bring anything less than a FF, and happens more than once, then i agree completely

I feel this way too, but I think that’s just a feeling. The people at the top of the executive decision making pool are mostly smart, and have no doubt figured out way more of the financial side than myself, you (probably), and about every other fan has.

If there is a silver lining, it’s that maybe it is a good thing to try and get as far out front in the NIL/portal era as we can.

Cal got out front with the OAD era, and it got him a natty and a bunch of final fours.

But, I know I know, no one likes to see how the sausage is made. But at the end of the day, what folks care about the most is if the sausage tastes good.

If this aggressive NIL/portal approach yields us a bunch of Ws and FFs in the next few years, that’s all fans will care about.

I agree with both of you. Watching us deal, it seems silly that we expected anything BUT Bill figuring this out as well as anyone.
