"Yikes!"

Yeah, it looks bad.

I saw an interview with a guy who owns a deep sea exploration co. of some sort, and he said the vessel is still considered "experimental", and apparently isn't equipped with a beacon that emits a periodic ultrasonic ping to help locate it, like a black box from an airliner would. And, that even in the event the sub could rise to the surface, the hatch is wrenched closed from the outside, so they wouldn't be able to open the hatch from the inside, themselves.

The carbon fiber body probably had only so many dives before imploding.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here, but the CEO of the co that owns the sub, OceanGate, is the captain of, (on), the missing sub.

how can you send that thing down with no tracking or plan for retrieval? seems incredibly irresponsible.

I mean for 250k you can go to near space on bozos rocketship right? Why go down to the ocean floor to see a rusting ship?

Also....the titanic wreck is wayyy farther south than I have always thought....its not terribly far north of Boston, ive always assumed it was up closer to greenland i guess.

250k to go and see a sunk ship that there is endless video of online in a tiny metal pod controlled by a Xbox controller.

No way.

The frantic search to find the missing Titanic tourist submersible continued on Wednesday after Canadian aircraft detected "underwater noises" in the search area.

The sounds prompted redirected searches by remotely operated vehicles, the U.S. Coast Guard said early Wednesday, noting that the effort had so far "yielded negative results."...

Let’s be optimistic and say these guys are found safe and sound.

Just a hypothetical physics question, then - if a carbon fiber submersible DID crush under the pressure of the deep ocean, would any (hypothetical) occupants even feel a thing?

We’re talking like tons of pressure per square inch. The force coming down, like a drunkard’s boot upon an empty beer can times a bajillion, from every angle at once, would prob knock one unconscious before one could even realize what happened, right

Pain receptors take anywhere from 20ms to 100ms to register.
I would guess it would take somewhere under a second for the submersible to fully crush but maybe not faster than 100ms.
It would be a blip.

I assume they would feel nothing. Or...if they did they wouldn't have time to register it before they were mush and goo.

Hopefully they're all wearing PFDs and once the submersible breaks open they'd just float to the top and be rescued.

I'm trying not to think about what it's like in that small metal/carbon tube with a potty chair that doesn't flush. You should try not to, too.

I kinda think the immense pressure of the deep sea would knock them out right quick. Imagine tons of pressure per square inch instantly coming at you from every direction at once. Like the sensation of your ears popping at the bottom of a pool, times a bajillion.

Or, it was some slow, agonizing thing, when one little screw at a time popped free, and the cabin of the submersible slowly fills up.

Or, they got gobbled like sashimi by ol’ Free Willy.

I was kidding about the PFTs. Like others, I think the inmates would die instantaneously, for all intents and purposes, eliminating any sensation of pain...

Yeah, PFDs would create dependency.

It’s up to those billionaires to pick themselves up off the ocean floor by their own bootstraps.
