I will jump in here and agree on the general trend of forcing games to be online.

Offer the game and the characters ( and their gear ) that can only be used offline.

So I've always been a M&K guy. I some sports and racing games with a controller on xbox 1 I think. And BFBC2 on Playstation for a few months when I didn't have a PC.

I bought a controller. WTF. It's like playing in a foreign language. That said, I could tell that my aim was definitely being helped outside of my doing. And in more than a little way. Not sure I'm gonna even try to learn it. There might be a really nice PS5 controller with an open-box designation soon at your Lawrence Best Buy.

It’s a lot.
But I also think it’s more not having time to play. When younger you could waste away hours and hours getting good at video games. Now, not so much.

It’s why I like easy single player games with good stories and good graphics. I can jump in for a couple hours a week and that’s it. Last of Us, Skyrim or Diablo on normal. That’ll do.

I’m overwhelmed by Madden though I think it’s awesome you can control every part of the offense and defense so elaborately. I just don’t have time to learn it.

I'm at least decent at FPS games. Somehow my reaction time hasn't gone down "too" much. My eyesight, OTOH, oof.

Holding that controller, today, for about 10 minutes...oof.

I used to be good at those way back in early Halo and Perfect Dark days.

I bought the PS3 Star Wars bundle a while back and signed on and died immediately walking out of a trench, sniped. Same thing happened two minutes later. That was the end of first person shooters online for me.

that sounds like my first online COD experience

now i’m the one doing the sniping

it’s tough when you’re competing against “pros” getting paid and streaming their game to their groupies

So I bought both Rollercoaster Tycoon I and Ii on steam and installed this thing called openrct2. It essentially makes both games into one, and allows you to upscale image quality to almost today.

Game is fun, and this renovated copy was well worth $8.

today, July 14, is Mario’s 40th birthday

i distinctly remember my first NES - had to drive 2 hours to Albuquerque to get it

https://amp.dw.com/en/super-mario-turns ... a-66224415

At one point during the development of the ground-breaking Donkey Kong video game, the owner of the warehouse, a man named Mario Segale, came to collect some overdue rent. The moustachioed Italian-American was not too pleased with his tenants during the visit and, according to a now famous story, berated the Nintendo of America head Minoru Arakawa in front of the others.

The visit inadvertently had provided a moment of profound inspiration...

It has been fun introducing my kids to a lot of old school arcade games now that my custom arcade is up and running at home. Donkey Kong Jr., Galaga, Ms. Pac-Man, Joust, 1943, and tons of others. It even has all the old Atari 2600 & 7200 games, Nintendo/Super Nintendo and Sega games, etc... about 6,400 games in total. Many are weird trash but there have been some hidden gems that have been fun to discover.

The joysticks that came with it are pretty cheap and inaccurate so I am waiting for some upgraded ones I ordered. I will do a similar upgrade of the buttons as well at some point. I'll have some customizing to do on the gates for them once they arrive but it sounds like I can get them pretty dialed in if I take a little time. I suspect that the better joysticks will make many more games more enjoyable as the current ones make playing a few games not fun.

Still playing Diablo 4; it's been fun overall. And yeah, I am with you guys on the online multiplayer FPS problems. They are not for me, either. I used to play with a big squad of CoD players and it was fun to do as part of a group but on your own, you're just sniper bait. Then the screaming foul-mouthed tweens make it even less enjoyable. I only play single player games on PS5 now.

My journey through consoles was Atari 2600, Atari 7200, Sega Genesis, PS2, PS3, PS4 and PS5. I never did any of the Nintendo consoles; not sure why other than "play what you have" responses from my parents. It feels like I must have had something between the 7200 and the Sega but maybe I was just out of the video game loop for a stretch of time. I think we had an old Apple 2e I played some games on in that gap. I was mostly outside or busy there for about 10 years so maybe that was all it was.

First two paragraphs- that sounds awesome. There are emulators for most old systems, and you can use a modern controller for most games.

I’m one of three known exceptions to the disdain for FPS games these days. I turn any game chat off, most of the time in MP. Battle royale for CoD, and Tarkovsky, though, mostly outstanding exchanges tend to happen (but yeah, there are still quite a few one-sided encounters with kids who should have been swallowed).

There was a good 5-8 year stretch where I’d say gaming went away from consoles and was mostly on c64, appleiie/c.

Haha, my bad, I read right over where you said exactly that. Oops.

I had every game made for the iie. Not sure if access was everywhere, but I lived in hawaii at the time, and Japanese guilds pirated everything. Hole punched 5.25 disks were my friend.

Seeing some of the "adult" Atari 2600 games was a surprise. Some really weird shit that I had no idea even existed. So weird.

Here's an interesting timeline broken out in several ways. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_o ... e_consoles

I like the "generation" view of it. Looks like 5th Gen is the only one I skipped as Sega Genesis carried me all the way to PS2 and I didn't get that until it had been out for a while and came down in price as I was poor back then.

We had Intellivision probably in 1986 -- I barely remember it.
Then Nintendo not soon after.
My mom sold the Nintendo at a garage sale within a year or two of owning it without any of us knowing because it was causing too much fighting between me and my brothers.

I wasn't allowed a gaming system until the summer before I moved out for college and immediately bought the N64.

Three brothers on a mostly single player gaming system was no bueno.
I think Double Dragon II and 8 Eyes were the only co-op games we had ( and 8 Eyes kinda sucked playing as the bird ) so sharing one remote led to cease fire breakdowns.
