Yours is rougher than most. I'm sorry you and you brother had to live through it, no one should have to deal with that.

Thanks 99, that's very kind of you. My dad had redeeming qualities too. He taught me to work, respect other people, and be a gentleman. Feels weird to have broached the subject.

I was struck in the moment reading Gutter's post this morning, and how instantaneously that 14 y/o boy took action to protect his mother, compared to the drawn-out nature of my situation lasting years. And, despite so much time, the lack of similar action on my part, despite having the same tool.

Of course, guns were always there in my life from the beginning, used for hunting and shooting clay pigeons, and treated with the respect they deserved. I'm certain that made all the difference.

Anyone remember Old Hawk from .com? He talked about how he and other students walking to and from their rural school carried rifles, ready to shoot anything they could-rabbit, squirrel, etc., to add to the pot at home. They'd lean their .22 rifles against the back wall of the one-room schoolhouse, and nobody gave them another thought until they left to walk home.

Sounds like a totally different world, sadly.

I'm sorry to have stirred up those memories for you Feral. Sounds like a very tough thing you went through. Horrible to see two people you love in that situation and struggling with having to deal with it as a child.

As an 8 (9, 10, 11, 12, and 13) year old I went to summer camp in/near Hayward Wisconsin.
One of the highlights for me was being taught how to respect and shoot a .22
Looking back, I was only 8 years old. The joy of pulling the trigger and putting a bullet through a paper target brought me joy - as an 8 year old.
So.....
1st question..... Good idea or bad idea to teach 8 year olds the joy/s of shooting guns?
2nd question.....How many kids who went to the same camp ended up being "mass shooters" because we were taught how to use a .22? My guess is zero but my guess is a lot became gun owners and learning how to shoot a .22 at camp was a factor.

Fast forward to 1985/1986. Sergeant Albright University of Kansas. You could actually get a credit hour for taking a class/course shooting a gun at a firing range on campus.
Buddy and I show up to class one day stoned out of our minds. Albright knew it. His words - "If you shoot one another it make me no never never mind. If you shoot me we gonna have a problem". STILL let us fire the guns. Why?
I remember his daughter was selling Girl Scout cookies and he had the sheet for us in the class to fill out to order them. Of course he targeted my buddy and I and we filled it out. He thought it was funny.
Forgetting all that....
1st question.... Good idea or bad idea to teach college kids the joys of shooting guns?
2nd question.....How many students who took the class/course ended up being "mass shooters" because we were taught how to use a .22? My guess is zero but my guess is a lot became gun owners and learning how to shoot a .22 at school was a factor.

nobody becomes a mass shooter because they learn how to probably shoot a .22....comeon now.

I agree.
I think if you want to own a particular weapon you should have mandatory training in it - like a license renewal - every, I dunno, two to three years - half a day class?

My views on gun violence, the anachronism that is the Second Amendment and my support for certain legislative actions are no secret. As a lifelong vegetarian I don’t hunt. However, when I was in college I used to go to the gun range and learned firearms skills - not handguns. Mainly.303 and 50-caliber, strictly in single shot mode.

I think I’m better off for it, learning how to follow very stringent range rules, physics (as Sparko said), respect for the weapons etc. At the end of each session we had to collect all the casings and tally them against the ammunition originally issued. Then there were the cleaning duties. Very educational. Some good habits I developed can be traced back to that experience.

Right; it's just not that fucking complicated. People who want to drive motorcycles or tanker trucks need different licenses (and insurance) than your generic Subaru Forester driver. People who want to work with children need more detailed background checks than your generic personal trainer.

And on and on.

We accept relative regulatory and licensing (and taxing and insurance) requirements ALL OF THE GODDAMN TIME.

And the bitch of it is, it's even written into the freaking Constitution on this issue.

.303 is a really really odd caliber to shoot....unless you were shooting in the UK in the 50s.

.50 caliber is massive and a superbly expensive round for target practice.

It’s always fun to ask a gun nut to recite their beloved second amendment; then, when they either don’t know or conveniently omit the initial clause, watch them squirm as they have to say or hear “well-regulated…”

It was not in the UK, but outside the US, and it was not the 50s - late 70s/early 80s. However, that was the origin. Those were the guns they had.

Also learned an interesting factoid about the origins of the caliber, about how the .303 ammunition cannot be used in enemy weapons but the .303 rifle can use enemy ammunition!

yea its a British military caliber from the 2nd world War.

must be a smaller bullet but same bore size.

like a .38 will shoot in a 357 pistol but a 357 won't shoot on a .38 pistol

Why is the .357 a smaller number than a .38 even tho it’s more powerful?

.38 and .357 are rhe same diameter round. The bullets are both .357, the .38 is the diameter of the loaded brass casing not the actual bullet....this is why it will fire in a .357.

the .357 is a longer round and is packed with more grains of gunpowder...it fires at nearly twice the speed and hits with almost twice the energy as a .38.......this is why its unsafe to fire a .357 out of a gun built for a .38

Why wouldn't bullet creators have a couple delineations/definitions then?
Diameter and power.

They have engineered an explanation as to what "well regulated" really meant 250 years ago to fit their current desires.
