For some context

2022 ESPN preseason rankings (where they finished):

1) Texas (3rd)
2) Oklahoma (7th)
3) Okie State (5th)
4) Baylor (6th)
5) Iowa State (10th)
6) Kansas State (2nd)
7) TCU (1st)
8) Texas Tech (4th)
9) West Virginia (9th)
10) Kansas (8th)

ESPN's computer kinda sucks at this.

Back on KU football, I look for marked improvement by the defense this year. It shouldn't be hard to move up from the 124th ranking, but the roster on that side of the ball just looks better overall. We will get to see what Borland is made of. I know Leipold believes in him so we'll see.

Yeah so we moved up from 129th to 124th last year so and we lost a lot more on that side of the ball.

If Lonnie would have stayed I would be more optimistic. However the offense going to be elite.

The GAME is the Illinois in week 2. They were awesome in D last year. If can win that one we rolling.

Losing Phelps hurts, but if they don't improve at all defensively, it's probably time to start looking at some defensive coaching changes.

Yeah.... Leipold doesn't just let dudes go. He's had the same DC for 10+ years. Borland's defense were kind of shit until about the 2018 season. Then in his 5th season, in 2019, he had a top 10 defense in all of CFB. Not just the MAC or whatever. In all of football in terms of yards allowed per game.

He's going to get 5 seasons. We're just now entering year 3. Technically year 2 1/2.

No doubt. I don’t think the defensive coaching staff will get canned if the defense sucks this year, but I hope that rising expectations means more pressure to make changes if things aren’t improving, at least within a couple of years. We’ll see.

I went to check FanDuel/DraftKings today to see what the action could be on Kansas winning 6+ regular season games and it's -170.

So Vegas thinks we're going bowling again.
Won't take that bet.

Might put a tiny bit on the giant +4800 for B12 title though.

Sometimes losing players is a good thing. We'll see if who they are replaced with is better than who they replaced. Defense needs to take a huge step forward this season to show that Leipold's KU program is still on the right track. The offense can't be expected to put up 50 a game to win.

the illinois game will tell a lot about ku as the missouri game will k-state. both kansas schools lost some dudes on the defensive side but return a lot on the other. rebuild or reload, idk? but it will be fun to watch unfold.

Illinois (6.5 wins). Bret Bielema has to replace much of his talented secondary unit while finding the right options at quarterback and running back, as well, while facing an early test on the road at Kansas with Penn State right after that, setting up a tough schedule that will test if Illinois can become bowl eligible again. fannation

Apparently, a KU walk-on lineman called in a bomb threat to Anderson Family Football Complex yesterday. Facility had to be evacuated.

Bizarre.
