On Saturday [July 16, 2022], the U.S. will transition the 10-digit National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to 988 – an easy-to-remember three-digit number for 24/7 crisis care. The lifeline, which also links to the Veterans Crisis Line, follows a three-year joint effort by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to put crisis care more in reach for people in need. This initiative is part of President Biden’s comprehensive strategy to address our nation’s mental health crisis, and is identified by U.S. Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra as a top priority at HHS. Since January 2021, the Biden-Harris Administration has made unprecedented investments to support the 988 transition, investing $432 million to scale crisis center capacity and ensure all Americans have access to help during mental health crises.

The National Suicide Hotline Designation Act, signed into law after the passage of bipartisan legislation in 2020, authorized 988 as a new three-digit number for suicide and mental health crisis. All telephone service and text providers in the U.S. and the five major U.S. territories are required by the FCC to activate 988 no later than July 16.

However, households are rapidly spending down that extra cash they’d socked away during the pandemic. Median account balances are at their lowest levels in roughly three years and have dropped as much as 41 percent from their peak in April 2021, when Americans were flush with government stimulus money and tax returns, according to a JPMorgan Chase Institute analysis of the bank accounts of 9 million Chase customers.

Taken together, the data helps explain the big mystery behind how the U.S. economy has managed to avoid a recession that many economists had forecast: Consumers, supported by a strong labor market, have been able to keep spending despite inflation and a sharp rise in borrowing costs.

The R's have determined they can't win a national election without the grievance rubes showing up at the polls. Nevermind that they don't have deep pockets, they need the votes.

This pandering is starting to alienate the big money supporters. Sure they will get another tax break but the chaos that comes with having a narcissistic lunatic on a self indulgent revenge trip is not really good for business. He is too chaotic and unpredictable. Stability helps sell big shit to consumers. I think the big money R donors would like a little more predictability and stability. When the party runs out of money they are likely to be more inclined to get their shit together and step back from the culture wars and get back to business.

5/11/23: American workers are more content than ever, according to The Conference Board Job Satisfaction 2023. The report finds improved satisfaction across nearly all 26 components—with gains in non-compensation factors like work-life balance outpacing even those from improved pay and benefits.

Overall, 62.3 percent of US workers were satisfied in 2022—up from 60.2 percent in 2021. That’s the highest level recorded since the survey began in 1987. Satisfaction has now surged for two consecutive years—rising 3.4 ppts in 2021 and 2.1 ppts in 2022. These post-pandemic gains continue a long-term trend: Job satisfaction has been rising steadily for over a decade, after hitting an all-time low of 42.6 percent in 2010 following the Great Recession.

“With unemployment at record lows, it’s a sellers’ market for labor—US workers are reaping the rewards,” said Eren Selcuk, Senior Economist at The Conference Board. “Job satisfaction was up across the board in 2022—and especially high for workers who switched jobs. The good news is that months of cooling rent increases are finally helping bring down inflation in a big way. I know that doesn't help you now, but this is a problem years in the making. As you know, after the GFC at the end of the Bush Admin., where for the first time in over half a century the value of your home lost rather than gained value, the response by home builders wasn't to build single-family starter homes, but apartment buildings where you can pack more people into a smaller space, and luxury homes where the margins are much higher. So, we've had and continue to have a shortage of lower-priced houses and apts., and with a low supply and higher demand...

Fortunately, it appears the chance of a recession, which might serve to temper shelter prices but would certainly be a net negative for Americans on the whole, appears to be waning:

When you cut the flow of immigrant workers into the country, it costs more to build a building so more builders seem to go to building things that have a higher profit margin in apartments and luxury homes. Thee isn't much money to be made on small single family homes and even less when you have to pay max price to those who build it. Factor in that many building material providers seem to be following the oil and grocery model of pretending there are short supplies so they can spike prices and gouge consumers and voila, the current situation.
