Re: Vivek ramaswamy
Exactly. Republicans, so desperate for something, anything, to use as a cudgel, have elevated the Keystone Pipeline to a level where it's referred to as if it's some huge basin of untapped petroleum reserves just below the surface, that would, if only Biden would allow it, immerse America in so much excess oil, the price would drop below 0 again, and gas stations would pay you to take it off their hands.twocoach wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2023 7:55 amHuh? Inconvenient fact: ...Expanding the Keystone would have increased global oil production by less than 1%, an amount, they explained, is "almost negligible."
"I can see why people make that connection," Nemet said."But in terms of gasoline prices and global oil prices, it's just something it's better to just ignore because it would have no impact."
More production, but higher costs for Americans
Even if the pipeline was already built, it wouldn't help with the price at the pump, Nemet added, noting that the U.S. has already doubled its oil production over the last 15 years. "And yet, we still have $100 per barrel oil."

Why they claim that a pipeline to carry oil FROM CANADA to US refineries is going to be some sort of boon for US oil independence or production is beyond me. It fails even the most basic common sense test.Feral wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2023 8:17 amExactly. Point being that it really doesn't matter how much oil you pump out of the ground if you can't cheaply and quickly distribute it to refineries to be turned into fuel. Production is not just accessing the oil - it involves multiple steps to get it into usable form and to consumers.twocoach wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2023 7:55 amHuh? The entire dumb dumb talking point of "the Keystone Pipeline would result in reduced US gas prices" has been debunked by experts in every avenue of the process for nearly a decade. Some studies show that it could actually RAISE prices. You may be right. I'm troubled by 1) the dates of your sources (2013, 2011) and 2) the qualifiers used in them (could, may, might). The point of the older dates is that this has been well known for some time. It's not like the passage of 9 years changed what the pipeline is used for or how that impacts production and costs.JKLivin wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2023 11:32 amYou may be right.
