You brought up Alex Jones saying that we'll have another pandemic and lockdowns before the next election. And you said he's right more than wrong. I'll bet $100 there is not another lockdown before the next election.

I never said he was unimpeachable. I did say that he has been right more often than not. Does that mean I'd bet my life on his word? No. Does it mean I trust him more than any other source or combination of sources? No. Does it mean that I would factor his insights into my decision-making rather than just trusting the word of the government outright? Absolutely.
Re: mitigation plans, I had a whole house generator installed. I have six months' worth of emergency provisions and an emergency water filtration system for me and my family. I also have my gun and my ammunition on hand. Not perfect, but better than most people I know.
Do you believe this is coming in October or were you just recklessly spouting off what you think is likely to be bullshit?

Making provisions and planning in private for you and yours is easy. If you are wrong no one is the wiser.
If you truly believe this is an issue why would you not gather up the rest of the leadership/management team and create a plan for the whole school? Even if you are wrong it is a good exercise.

I did not say "imagine" an event, I asked that you describe an event you experienced or have second hand personal knowledge of.
If it has only happened in your imagination that's fine.
Things were shut down during covid, did you find yourself in need of two or more of those things on the list to survive?

Help me out here, you and psych have obviously thought about this stuff more than I have. I would think you might have some insights into things I haven’t considered so you can help me understand the preparation aspect of all of this. I hope this doesn’t sound specious, honest questions here.
Whole house generator. I have looked into that. Our electric service goes out at least once or twice every summer. Never more than a day and half. We could buy a generator but we can live without electricity for that long. The worst case is the food in the refrigerator going bad but we have two big camping coolers and we can pack them with ice packs from our freezer and get by for two days. If the utilities are out due to some sort of interruption that is due to a large scale violent conflict, where does the gas come from to keep the generator going long term? Maybe I am over thinking it.
Water purification. I have that for camping. But if there is not a source of groundwater near your home, do you plan to collect rainwater? Dig a hole in the yard and do the tarp and rock and dirt sweat with jar underneath to collect a pint every night sorta thing? If the water is still coming in from the local distribution system no big deal, but then why a purification system? The nearest creek to my house is 2 miles and about 150 foot elevation drop. And I assume in a major violent conflict I am not going to be able to just drive down there and fill a bucket uncontested. It would be a haul to carry my 5 gallon water canisters down there and back. Help me out, how are you two handling this issue? We had a cistern in the backyard but we have been told Jimmy Hoffa might be buried in there (true story) so we just leave the big concrete lid on that thing.
6 months of rations, I love this, you are ready for a full on medieval siege! The mongrel hordes are roaming the neighborhood and you are safe inside your fortress. I don’t think my home could sustain a full on attack. The exterior walls are only 16 inch thick masonry and the floor framing is 3 inches of concrete on steel bar joists. It would throw the hordes for a loop at first as it looks like an ordinary cottage style house from the street, but it was built for security by a mafia member (source of Jimmy Hoffa rumor), but it seems he built it just to thwart the first assault. There was an escape door/tunnel out the back, because he didn’t seem to think it could take a multi hour assault, let alone a 60 day siege is my guess. Unfortunately we filled in the escape door/tunnel because water was coming into the basement through it and we figured that was more of an issue than needing to escape an enemy assault, short sighted I know. I assume you and psych both live in something more bulletproof and bombproof if you plan on holding out for 60 days.
Guns! Fuck yeah! Have either of you ever had someone pull a gun on you? I assume you have since you are both staunch proponents of the need to own one. I have had a gun pointed at me three times myself. I lived in the hood for most of my first 35 years on the planet so it was sort of expected. The first time I was in grade school. A guy pulled up to the stop sign I was standing at and he pointed a gun out the window of his car at me and was yelling something. I looked past him and I ignored him and walked by in front of his car like I didn’t see him. He sat there for awhile and then just drove away. The second time a guy came to the door of my apartment yelling and screaming and pointing a gun in my face. I took one step towards him and told him if he ever pointed a gun at me again I would shove it so far up his ass he would never find it, and then slammed the door in his face. He never pointed a gun at me again, we were neighbors. The third time a drunken coworker showed up at the flour mill I worked at in the west bottoms railyard with a rifle and started shooting up the place. I ducked out the back door and ran until I couldn’t hear the gunshots any more. I guess all three instances could have gone a different way if I was carrying a gun, but not sure if the outcomes could have been improved. This is great, you have information that much of the public either is not aware of, or does not believe.
You have a strategic advantage now!
As a leader you have a responsibility to your staff and your students to prepare and plan for this, to make any transitions simple and smooth. Have you been in the forefront of letting other department heads and the chancellor and others within the administration know this is coming? Did you learn any lessons from the last shutdown that informed your planning for this shutdown? As the head of a household what plans have you made to minimize the impact on your day to day life?
You have a whole month to work this out if you haven't finished your plans. Plenty of time to bring faculty and students up to date on your contingency plans.

Like you said, what you have done to prepare yourself and you family is not perfect but better than most people you know - but let's be honest. In reality it's all basically worthless against one or more people hell bent on making it worthless.
Please convince me I am wrong. For your sake more than mine.

I wasn’t envisioning a Mad Max scenario. I live in a small community where people look out for each other. My neighbors are mostly elderly people and young families, so I’d be sharing my electricity and water filtration with others. Ideally, we’d be pooling resources. My gun is not for shooting other people, but for the abundant deer who venture into my back lot and would be a great source of meat.RainbowsandUnicorns wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 7:38 pmI am confident with the right "tools" I and/or someone else could destroy your generator in less than a minute.JKLivin wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 11:12 amI never said he was unimpeachable. Your "mitigation" is more focused on survival if necessities were to run out / not be available - than if the boogie man and/or government were to become your enemy and try and do you and your home harm.

I guess all three instances could have gone a different way if I was carrying a gun, but not sure if the outcomes could have been improved. How have your guns saved your lives or protected you in the past? Have you both lived in the hood as well?
The “I’ve got a gun and plenty of ammo” guys are hilarious to me. Define PLENTY of ammo?
Let’s say that someone with a proficiency in tactical assault….weapon removal….weapon retention….and a strong knowledge of defeating barricades shows up, your gun(s) and ammo would most likely end up in that other person’s possession. That person could fire 1 round per your dozens to affect a hit.
But yeah, I would keep barking out your inventory to as many strangers as possible.

I wasn’t envisioning a Mad Max scenario. I live in a small community where people look out for each other. My neighbors are mostly elderly people and young families, so I’d be sharing my electricity and water filtration with others. Ideally, we’d be pooling resources. My gun is not for shooting other people, but for the abundant deer who venture into my back lot and would be a great source of meat.
If I were living in Chicago or even the large town ten miles down the road, I’d share your concerns. Were they to encroach on us, Try That in a Small Town would prove apropos.
Your "mitigation" is more focused on survival if necessities were to run out / not be available - than if the boogie man and/or government were to become your enemy and try and do you and your home harm.

And it sounds so much more rational than, "I am preparing for the Alex Jones predicted shutdown."Overlander wrote: ↑Thu Aug 24, 2023 8:05 pmOh, my bad. Gotcha! I think.
