i'm not sure what the %'s are. but when you fly, you should not be surprised if you have some sort of delay or cancellation. it's just part of the experience these days. especially during high times. holidays and such.
is mayor pete and uncle joe to blame. probably. afterall. it has gotten much worse since our last transition of power.

Re: 2024
In 2008, the last year of the GW Bush Admin, our nation's GDP declined in the 1st, 3rd, and 4th quarters by -2.7%, -1.9%, and -8.2% respectively. In the last, 4th quarter of W's admin, the US lost > 2 million jobs. 2 million American jobs went poof, in 3 months. Think about that...
Despite this, and republican refusal, (because they're such "deficit hawks" whenever a dem is in office...), to let the Obama Admin sufficiently stimulate the economy to end the recession and support our economy and job creation sooner, they spent the rest of the Obama admin. blaming Obama for the "slow recovery".
Same As It Ever Was
Let's blame Pete and Brandon for our current situation, even tho the pilot shortage has been building for years in large part because the military pilots trained during the Vietnam war who became commercial airline pilots are reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65, and the pandemic struck a year before they took office.
-In case no one has noticed, the weather is more volatile than it used to be.
I know, let's blame Brandon! Why doesn't Brandon get a Sharpie and change the weather patterns, like Trump did with hurricane tracks?
-In April 2020, the number of airline passengers fell 96% in a single day, prompting airlines to worry about their survival. Until the CARES Act was passed to help employers keep employees on the payroll, some airlines sold and retired aircraft, and some airlines, including Delta and American Airlines, cut a third of their staff. Airlines offered early retirement packages to senior pilots, some of whom were making anywhere from $250,000 to $400,000 a year. Today, if those pilots returned to flying, they’d lose seniority and start at the bottom of the pay scale... One source i saw said that ~ 400,000 airline employees were fired, laid off, and furloughed because of the pandemic.
Thanks, Brandon!
-BECOMING A PILOT TAKES TIME
It usually takes three years to accumulate the necessary 1,500 hours of flying time required to apply for an air transport pilot license, which is needed to fly a commercial airliner or commercial cargo plane. After an airline crash in 2009, the FAA increased the required hours to 1,500 from 250.
Damn you Pete!
-A commercial pilot license...can cost up to $100,000, which can be a big barrier to people pursuing the profession.
If only Brandon wasn't so old!
-EVERYONE ELSE ACROSS THE WORLD NEEDS PILOTS, TOO
In the past, airlines would recruit directly from the military, but even the U.S. Air Force is facing a shortage of pilots. Airlines across the globe are aggressively recruiting, as are regional airlines and cargo airlines like UPS and FedEx.

I don't contest any of those facts. The sticking point for me is that airlines, who are all intimately aware of these fact, are allowed to continue to schedule flights that they absolutely know have little to no chance of adhering to the schedule. If these are the realities, schedule fewer flights and make sure they are on time/not cancelled. If that requires DOT regulations to make it happen, so be it. It's not rocket science.Shirley wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 10:08 am In 2008, the last year of the GW Bush Admin, our nation's GDP declined in the 1st, 3rd, and 4th quarters by -2.7%, -1.9%, and -8.2% respectively. You have me mislabeled as a pure Libertarian. I absolutely think there is value in government regulation of some things, especially where public safety and welfare are involved. The major airlines have sufficient power to squeeze out smaller airlines who are trying to run on time and provide good customer service, so as long as they all agree that sacrificing these ideals for profit is acceptable, they are safe. It takes a higher authority to come in and say this is not going to happen anymore.jfish26 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 11:03 amSo, regulation should solve the problem.JKLivin wrote: ↑Wed Sep 20, 2023 10:59 amI don't contest any of those facts. Dear Shirley,
If it feels like you spend an inordinate amount of your time educating people, (who, despite having strong, passionate feelings about a subject appear to know little to nothing about it), so you can argue with them, trust that "feeling"...
May 8, 2023
Today President Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg proposed new rules that would require airlines to compensate passengers beyond a ticket refund for what are being called significant controllable delays or cancellations.
Buttigieg: "...Even the airlines' own industry statistics show that FAA issues and air traffic control is not responsible for most of these delays. But any time we see an indication that it could be, that's something that's a real concern. And it's why we have been acting both to modernize FAA systems and to hire more air traffic controllers, bringing on 1,500 additional controllers this year. And the president's budget for fiscal year '24 proposes resources to bring in another 1,800 controllers. I do have to say, though, in the midst of this negotiation over the budget, that what House Republicans passed a few days ago would really stop us in our tracks and would actually reduce our ability to staff these air traffic control towers, lead to furloughs at the FAA, even shut some towers down at the exact moment when it's abundantly clear that we need to do more, not less, to support our air traffic control system.".

Capitalizing on the tension in our society coming out of the Vietnam war, anti-war and civil rights demonstrations, the Civil Rights & Voting Rights acts, forced busing, multiple assassinations, the Watergate scandal, the Arab oil embargo with the price of a barrel of oil increasing from $2 to $11 in '73, (the first substantial increase in energy prices since WWII), the inflation that followed, the Iranian hostage crisis, among any number of other things, Reagan decided to appeal to "The Moral Majority", i.e., white evangelical Christians in his 1976 republican presidential campaign by talking endlessly about "Welfare Queens", i.e., lazy black women living off your hard work, and then in 1980 when he weaponized "the government is the problem" so white Americans would have yet another entity to focus their anger about their unfulfilled expectations on, it was the beginning of a now > 4 decade-long crusade by republicans to undermine Americans' faith in our government institutions that Trump has eagerly picked up the baton to spoon-feed his oh so aggrieved base, like water to a dog suffering from hydrophobia, i.e., rabies.
Mission Accomplished", republicans!
So, why would we expect anything other than what we presently have?
(And, don't get me started, or I'll talk about how Gingrich made people you disagree with your enemy, the "Hastert Rule" where the republican Speaker will not schedule a floor vote on any bill that does not have majority support within the republican party—even if the majority of the members of the House would vote to pass it, the success by republicans of turning "compromise" into a four-letter word, "bipartisan", what is that?, and any number of other features republicans have added to their arsenal along the way to continually divide us.)

What exactly happened to YOU and why do you feel HE is at fault?
All of these problems are because airlines are allowed to schedule more flights than they are capable of reasonably staffing and because there are not enough air traffic controllers to keep airports running smoothly. It is a DOT oversight issue, and Mayor Pete has done next to nothing to address it.
To say Mayor Pete has done next to nothing to address it is unfair and not true - as a quick internet search would prove. I can and very well might agree with you that he probably hasn't done enough but the man has made efforts. I am not convinced ALL of YOUR problems are because of the reasons you mention.
* WE don't know why the pilots were delayed in showing up. Could be any of multiple reasons - some of which in NO WAY would be Buttigieg's fault.
* I have seen flights backed up too. Never spent hours on a runway waiting to take off but I have seen/heard others such as yourself who have. Do WE know why the flights were backed up? Again, could be any of multipole reasons - some of which in NO WAY would be Buttigieg's fault.
* Maybe it's true but I don't believe airlines don't care about being on time. I have personally witnessed things that proved to me they do care about being on time. Such as a plane change due to mechanical issues and a separate flight with a gate change. In both instances they resolved the issues in a manner in which my flights were NOT delayed. If they didn't care they wouldn't have made the effort to hustle and resolve the issues.
