The Last Sane Republican
Once a nominee and now a pariah, Mitt Romney, the last sane Republican, speaks out about the dissolution of the Republican Party.

I remain quite worried about what exactly will happen when the dam finally breaks, and the right confronts the reality that it's out of options other than (1) dramatically reshape the platform (and risk losing a TON of religious-right money and other support in the process), (2) make open war on (or simply disregard) the electoral process, and its results, altogether.Shirley wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 11:51 am The Last Sane Republican

If you put a gun to my head today and asked me which one will most likely happen - it's the latter, unfortunately. They understand if they do the former, they might not win another federal election that matters in 20+ years.
Although part of me believes (hopes) that if they truly abandoned the crazies and simply took a more liberal social stance but held onto conservative fiscal policies, they'd probably make gains in unexpected areas.

It's all sunk cost fallacy stuff. Every day the "non-crazy" portion of the party declines to pull the ejection handle and take the medicine of a long walk home, that portion gets closer to being on the plane when it finally hits the ground.kubowler99 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 23, 2023 12:37 pm If you put a gun to my head today and asked me which one will most likely happen - it's the latter, unfortunately. what’s simple, is mich
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Mich’s Ripken-Like streak is as strong as ever.
Saying something stupid every 4-5 minutes is, I assume, pretty hard work.

It's as childish and simpleton to believe that Trump is only running because Biden is as it is to believe that Trump would have just faded away after losing the last time.
He is what the majority of Republicans want. They have a lot of other options but of them all, they want Trump as their candidate. Simple as that.

Ultimately, it belongs in the FAFO thread.twocoach wrote: ↑Tue Oct 24, 2023 8:41 amIt's as childish and simpleton to believe that Trump is only running because Biden is as it is to believe that Trump would have just faded away after losing the last time.

The right, drawing dead from a policy standpoint, smashed the crazy button so hard for so long that the voters are now hooked. Addicted to the madness. Satisfied only by the sugar high that comes from being an opposition party.

Yep. But you can only do that for so long. Especially when, because you're drawing dead from a policy standpoint, you have to create a Coalition of the Damned in order to even get within ELECTION FRAUD!!! range.

Former Vice President Mike Pence suspends his 2024 presidential bid
The former vice president’s campaign never gained traction as he confronted a GOP that has moved beyond the Reagan-era conservatism he embodied.

I don’t think Reagan would have recognized what Pence represents. Pence represents the Ayottallah faction of the Republican Party - Pence being the Christian part of the Christian White Nationalism movement that dominates the Party.
