IMHO the whole “leave of absence” thing is little more than a nice move by Self for all parties to save face.

Vick was held to particularly high expectations to regain the privilege of playing Kansas basketball. And in all likelihood, he fucked it up.

I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing as a fan to be upset with a player who did fuck up such a conditional last chance, nor do I think it’s necessarily a bad thing for a fan to still support such a player.

The only thing I think is legit egregious in this thread is, either of those honkey tonk Tylers over Lagerald?

There's been around 190 scholarship seasons under Bill Self.
In 20 of those seasons did a scholarship player average more than 14 PPG ( Vick was one of them, of fifteen players, there were repeat players like Collins and Simien and Langford ).
In 34 of those seasons did a scholarship player average more than 12 PPG ( Vick was two of them ).
I know the common argument will be 'but but its not all about box scores'.

But points is literally the first thing that is shown in said box score.
And it's not on accident.

I would also mention Vick's three point percentage for his career is 9th-10th all time under Self ( kinda depending on your cut off - mine is 6 or 7 PPG or more ).
And his three point percentage this year and last year rank top 8 all time under Self.
( not counting TRobs and Jeff Witheys )

So to say he was a below average scholarship player, or hurt us more than helped us compared to the average scholarship basketball player, is ignoring any and all common sense.

Bill Self's Kansas teams have averaged around 78 PPG while he's been at KU.
If there's been 12 or so scholarship players on each team that means the average scholly player averages 6.5 PPG ( and likely less because you aren't accounting for walk ons ).

Vick averaged less than that once, his freshman year.
He averaged 9.4 PPG in his career.

You can't ignore that Vick flaked out and quit on his team midseason. Now, maybe it's a serious family issue, but I think we'd hear about it if it were, so he's either left on his own or was asked to leave for issues he's responsible for. That's going to be a major part of his legacy, and is among the worst final acts of any KU player. And for sure should be a major factor against him when we're talking about where he sits in the hierarchy of players.

That doesn't erase all the shit he accomplished in his time here. The game winners, the 30 point nights, the 360 dunk, the alley-oops, the crazy 3's, etc. I mean, he doesn't suck. But with every game he misses for his leave of absence his standing takes a pretty large hit. Quitting on your team (or being forced out for shit you did) is about the worst thing you can do.
