Schools/daycare. Businesses.

Background checks mandatory, with a week or two waiting period, paid for with a tax on said gun.

Production of newer guns should halt. Any new gun should have zero semi auto/auto capabilities.
Bolt action. Double barrel or break action. Pump. That's it.
Newer guns should be built to prevent modifications - i.e. break the gun.
Max capacities of these guns should be 4 or 5.
No magazines or clips. You have to individually load each round.

Human beings hunted successfully with bows, spears, boomerangs, bolos.
You can manage with 4 shots from a rifle or shotgun.
I'd say the same thing for self defense - if you don't hit with your first one or two shots, you're probably in trouble anyways.

Buy back programs for guns that exist should be promoted. Give a reasonable x amount of years you have to return any gun that is deemed, on the list, as not one of the grandfathered in guns ( that are close to the gun modifications listed above ). After that time period, any gun not on the list is illegal, with seizure, fines and jail time depending on offense. Any modifications to a gun would face similar penalties.

No silly gun shows. Gun shops would have to be similar to ABC, a controlled centralized business with unified standards and practices.

If you reallly want to fire those more high powered weapons, there can be places you can fire them, renting them, on the premises, like a shooting range.

Either the drinking age should go down to 18 or the gun buying age should go up to 21.
( i'd prefer the latter, honestly, i'd prefer the option not listed above, drinking age to 18, gun buying to 21 ).

The 2nd Ammendment was intended for colonies/commonwealths/states that didn't have a standing army yet as a means to protect themselves. It was a new nation. Washington and the Federalists changed that in the mid 1790s when the Army was created to fight the Native Americans. If the States want to create militias, where people volunteer and train and have access to those weapons, much like joining the military but directly just for your state and not Federally bound in anyway, because they think/feel the State could rise against a tyrannical government, i'm in support of those members having access to the weaponry the National Armed Forces have ( though they would never get even close to the capabilities with pin point distance missiles, high speed jets, drones etc ).
I can get on board with most (probably 90%) of that. I think a lot of that is reasonable and practical.

My tweaks would be to allow magazines in bolt action rifles. You still have to slide the bolt to cycle in a new round, but you don't have to physically hand load the next round like a single shot. 22.

I also am not sure what to do with handguns. Under your rules they would essentially be outlawed. I dont think they should be banned completely.

*edit to clarify

* bolt action rifle magazines usually only hold 3 rounds +1 in the chamber so 4 total. Not 17 or anything crazy. If you get rid of all magazines (logistically how do you even do that with the millions already out there?) you're going to end up with a lot a lot of wounded animals that go off to die somewhere else and never get found or utilized.

* yes we hunted with all of those things in past times (and still hunt with bows) but the old times weren't subject to very highly regulated rules and seasons. They hunted when hungry and killed what was available when it was available. We get 5 days to find and kill a specific type and gender of elk or 9 days to find a kill a specific type and gender of deer etc.

My suggestion:
Get better at shooting.

And also I’d be open to new regulations if the new rules made it so hunters needed more time.

Older types of guns would be illegal. You couldn’t get rid of them but you’d just run the risk of getting caught and penalized.

You could have new handguns created with these rules in mind. Make it difficult to quickly fire round after round.

it's not always as simple as "get better at shooting"

nobody's committing mass murder with a 4 round bolt action .308.

make all older models illegal? that's where you lose me because you drift away from the reality of how things can change and lean into the current anger of the situation.

It’s bound to loose a lot of people.
They will have to deal because we can prevent this by doing what other countries have.

I don’t understand how it’s more complicated. People killed animals with one shot muskets.

My friend hunts and has a great accurate scope and rifle and shoots deer one shot most often through the heart.

In my opinion, the ONLY justification for ordinary folks having access to assault rifles is that other seemingly-ordinary, but possibly-crazy, folks have access to assault rifles.

i don’t disagree, but by this logic bow-hunting should be outlawed as well

Is it too early (or too late) to say “Thoughts and Prayers”? I can never get it straight. Given that we go through this about once a week or so I would have thought that we would be experts by now!!

I don’t need to be an expert to know that you should be able to hunt with the weapons that I described above. People do so now. People did so with much less before that. It will be more difficult to do for some but its not difficult to understand.

I somewhat respectfully responded to Boebert's prayers on Twitter/X. Not sure if it was Elon's peeps or some "hackers" but my response disappeared as well as many of my responses/replies to other people for unrelated things. Hmmmmm.

Getting back to Maine.
Of course people are going to blame/use the excuse on mental illness. Which brings me to my least favorite Gutterisms.
1. You have to be mentally ill to intentionally kill multiple innocent people but you have to be sane enough to take a gun, put bullets in the gun, pull the trigger, aim at, and shoot those people.
2. A person doesn't have a gun, a person doesn't shoot another person/people with a gun.

you have to be mentally ill to not recognize that this country has a gun problem

The hunting thing is a red herring. Really, so too is the entire good guy with a gun thing.

The issue has escaped all logic, and it's emotional. Getting "call your doctor" duration boners over individuals' access to assault rifles has become, entirely, a totem. A sign that you belong to the club.

i’ll add to this by saying that making hunting a little bit more difficult for a few should not be what stands in the way of protecting lives from mass-shooter events

Right.
I am in favor of hunters who eat the animal. It makes all the sense in the world. I’d never want to restrict that—people eat animals every day so it’s doesn’t make sense to oppose hunting. But you don’t need a semi auto to do it.

i don’t disagree, but by this logic bow-hunting should be outlawed as well
two caveats to this logic though

1. Arrows don't penetrate or break heavy bone (ribs they can/will, but hips shoulders legs etc they wont)
- so a misplaced arrow shot will hurt the animal but it's typically a non fatal wound that they recover from fairly quickly. Rifle shots shatter bones, so a misplaced rifle shot that blows out one leg or one shoulder is basically a death sentence for the animal. They can get surprisingly far on adrenaline before they lay down.

2. A bow hunter usually is taking a shot from 40yds ish much easier to track and find a wounded animal to put down.

Rifle hunters are shooting from 3-500yds. That's a lot for ground to cover and a lot of time for the animal to move and hide. If you have a second bullet you can usually rack the bolt and get the next round in without ever taking your eye out of the scope so your much more likely to know where the animal is to get your "make sure" shot in.

Larry Bird was arguably the greatest shooter ever. Did he hit 100%? why not, maybe he should've just "got better".
