More power to you and all the gamblers. Not my thing. I worry about loosing money and can't enjoy the game.
Defense. Rebounds.

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

There was a race at Scottsville in Australia about 10 minutes ago. Asshole me was writing something to post on the Israel/Palestine thread. I had "handicapped" the race and wrote down my bet. I spaced out and didn't get the bet in on time. It paid $227.58 for a 10 cent Superfecta. In other words, I fucked up!

It's going to be one of those days!
Unless, I keep my $48.06 remaining in my TVG account and don't wager. Yeah, right. Like that's going to happen. Thankfully it's only $48.06 that I will inevitably be pissing away.

Re: Sports Gambling
I love, make that, "like" to gamble, but I don't enjoy going to casinos, for instance, because I enter with the knowledge that the house has an edge. I much prefer gambling against other individuals, e.g., in a poker game, where the field is level, and it's a match of wits. I have resisted gambling on sports because even tho I have a keen interest in BB and FB, I don't pay enough attention to not have a disadvantage against someone who does. And, much like 99 said, having $ wagered on a game can take some of the joy of watching the game out of it, at least for me.
Some people consider trading stocks and especially stock options like I do "gambling", and I don't necessarily disagree with them. There's no ? about the very similar adrenaline rush associated with it. (Saturdays and Sundays are relatively boring compared to days of the week, since the market is "closed".) I follow "rules" in my option trading that mitigate my risk, that include never risking > 2% of my total portfolio value on any one trade.

I am going to share 5 semi quick stories (I have shared a few on here before) but first......Shirley wrote: ↑Sun Dec 03, 2023 8:06 am I love, make that, "like" to gamble, but I don't enjoy going to casinos, for instance, because I enter with the knowledge that the house has an edge. In response to your post, gambling is very basic logic to me.
Yes, casinos have the edge. That's why (and how) they are in business.
I don't trust anyone when it comes to gambling. I have seen and heard too many things.
Some (many? most?) people feel wagering on games is a 50/50 bet. It's really not.
Does it take away the joy of watching a game? All depends. Am I betting on a boring game in which I don't give a damn about either team? Then it adds more enjoyment to me.
As far as trading stocks..... When I worked on a trading floor (CBOE) people would say to me it's "legalized gambling". The majority of those people didn't really understand what a stock (equity) option is. I tried to explain that no one could/would lose more than their initial investment but there was unlimited upside so compared to betting on a sporting event, investing in options was probably a better way to throw away their money. They would roll their eyes.
Story 1.
Puerto Rico with a buddy. Rainy day so we decided to stay in and gamble at the hotel casino. Went to the Black Jack table. I don't know the exact amount but I believe I lost close to 20 consecutive hands. I'm not sure how accurate this is but I have read the odds of that happening are about 2 million to 1.
After I lost about the 15th consecutive hand I started yelling "EL BANDITOS". Did it to the point I was banned from the Casino. Was PISSED at the time. Now I laugh.
Story 2.
Westin Hotel in Chicago. In a hotel room with several NBA players. They were playing cards - for money. I was NOT playing. I was an observer. Someone had removed the mirror from the wall. Instead of turning the face in towards the wall, it was face out. About 5 hands later I caught on. The mirror reflected one of the guys cards. I sort of sided eyed a couple of the guys and they gave me a look like you better keep your mouth shut.
Story 3.
Was in Vegas with a couple of buddies. They knew a bunch of other people. One of the guys had a younger brother that knew how to count cards. Sort of a savant. He wasn't of legal gambling age. Not sure how or why but he had been allowed in some casinos. Maybe they didn't check Id? He would stand near a table and touch his body in different places in regards to helping people and letting them know what cards to be expecting. Kid was known and banned in many/most casinos.
Story 4.
Cab driver in Vegas. Not sure how true but he told me this "scam". He said he had worked in a casino. Said if I play Roulette to always go to a table if I see just one other person who seems to be winning.
Said to copy what that person is doing but not to make it too obvious and put some chips on a couple of other options. Said there are people in cahoots with the Croupier. Gets to the point where the Croupiers can be so good that they can pick a number (lets say 8) and the ball lands within 4 spaces of that number on the wheel - one direction or the other. I have no idea how that's possible because the ball bounces around. I always thought there might be some type of manipulation (magnetic?). I do fully believe it's some how some way "fixed".
Story 5.
Mobil Oil trading pit on the CBOE. There were other companies in the trading pit but the people in the pit primarily traded Mobil.
Two guys....
One guy, Cornell grad and got his Masters and Ph.D from the Courant Institute of Mathematics. Taught applied math at Brown. Guy was literally a mathematical genius.
Other guy, HIGH SCHOOL dropout.
They were equally successful traders.

Made a mistake. Meant to bet a Superfecta of 4/367/12367/All
Instead I bet 4/357/12357/ALL
BOOM!

I know this isn't in the degenerate category, as I'm not talking about bets I've made, so I apologize if my post is ill-placed.
Is anyone else weirded out by ESPN owning (or having a brand named after them) a sports betting app? It seems like EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK on so many different levels.

I don't follow this analyst but whenever I do happen to see her she seems to have a rather unique angle or pov when it comes to what consumers, (whose spending drives ~ 70% of the American economy), are doing, and why. And while this segment is about the growth of online betting, I'm posting it more because of the demographic information associated with it, and its possible impact(s) on society.

I got into it a bit more once it was legalized in Kansas (such that I could do it on my phone). I am probably saved from myself a little by living in Missouri...which means I need to drive to the border to place bets. I can't just sit there and chase losses.pdub wrote: ↑Sat Dec 02, 2023 3:57 pm Degenerates only.

Other than "fun" bets I put on things I want to happen (like KU covering tonight), I only bet where there is some sort of advantage or promotion (like a parlay with "insurance" that drops a leg, or "no sweat" bets, or an odds boost). I figure that if I stay in that box, I'm doing as much as reasonably possible to eliminate the house edge. I'm not very aggressive...almost all bets in $5 or $10 at most tickets.
My biggest regret this fall is that I didn't notice, until it was too late, that my parlay that included a football win over OU and a DST touchdown (a game-script theory, I guess) didn't get processed.
