Edmunds EV Charging Test: How fast does each EV charge?

Edmunds recently tackled the tricky question of comparing electric vehicle charging times. While automakers make various claims about fast charging times and range added per minute, Edmunds noted that it is nearly impossible to compare the different automaker claims and understand which vehicles are actually the best.

To address the issue, Edmunds said it teamed up with EV-testing specialists at P3 to get the most detailed charging data. P3 was noted to utilize a device that monitors and records electricity use while an electric vehicle is connected to a fast-charging station as well as power request communication between the EV and the station. The research firm then combined P3's data with Edmunds data on how much electricity a car uses per mile of driving to report back actual miles per charging hour. Notably, Edmunds said the independent evaluation of fast-charging speeds counters different automakers' charging speed data.

The model that scored the best with the Edmunds metric of tested miles per charging hour was the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Limited RWD at 868 miles per hour in ideal conditions. The South Korean automaker also took several of the other top ten spots with the Kia EV6 and other variations of the Ioniq model. The Porsche Taycan 4S and Taycan GTS made the top ten, as did the 2024 Mercedes-Benz EQS 450+, Genesis Electrified G80, and Tesla (TSLA) Model 3. Scoring at the very bottom of the fast-charging list were two versions of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, two versions of the Chevrolet Bolt, and three Rivian Automotive (RIVN) models.

I spy, on that list, my present pipe-dream car. But that’s a dream that’s three-kids-out-of-college away, to say nothing of everything else that would need to go right.

Fine, I’ll tell you: I want a Porsche Taycan. I’d also like a helicopter, and a private island somewhere on Atlantic time.

3/4 ton long box, 6.4L 8 speed. same engine and transmission as the 1 ton, will pull the same as a 1 ton, slightly less payload capability but only slightly. gasser (I dont tow everyday, and you can buy a lot of gas to make up for the up front price difference even if the mpg is less) just under 30k miles. got it for under 40k. So..all in all, fairly good deal if such a thing exists in the truck/car world.

the 8ft bed makes my life so so much better both for work and for stuff around my little mini mini ranch. Plus to get the full tax deduction I needed at least a 3/4ton long box. Next I need a decent little trailer, that also would make life easier. I have a homemade one but it's not great...plus built it to tie with a 1/2ton so it's a little lighter.

In my line of work, being an hour ahead of even the east coast would be a huge lifestyle benefit. Can get up super early and have things off my desk and into the wild (where it's other people's problem) before most folks are even done with their coffee.

move to Iceland! you'd have the jump on us all! haha (I only half kid, I would love to visit Iceland, I hear it's wild and fantastic.)

thankfully I don't worry about timezones for my work, I just have beat everyone to their morning coffee in my own zone ha

One of my regrets is that I didn't take advantage of the direct KC-Reykjavik route when it was available. Can do a really cool, really cost- and time-efficient trip there. A fraction of mainland Europe (or even NYC etc.).

It sounds like a great fit. Hope it turns out to be reliable.

My best friend has one, that thing is sweet.
Being an Audi guy, I prefer the ETron.
But, they are basically pretty much the same.

I would love to have the luxury of a toy car one day! But that day is quite far off, and more likely than not, permanently over the horizon.
