Why wasn't there outrage for the decade plus he was on a hit TV show? Why no outrage from the black leaders or celebs until he decided to throw his hat in the political arena?

You need to realize a lot of the racist accusations took place before social media existed.
Things tend to get swept under the rug after extended periods of time.
Perhaps the outrage from black leaders and celebs that occurred after he threw his hat in the ring was fueled by the multiple perceived racist comments/remarks he made on the campaign trail. Should they have been ignored?
