If it weren't for the magical NC run with the DMac Och CB and JW team then Self's career and these last few years would feel quite a bit differently imo.
NT and Elmarko have underwhelmed, on top of the arterio morris fiasco

that’s a whole lot going wrong at the same time, but it’s just one season

if you don’t think 2020 was a defacto championship, then that’s on you. the roster issues this year absolutely fall on Self’s shoulders (despite a lot of bad luck), but i don’t see this in any way as some sort of trend

next year’s class is quality (on paper), with rumblings that it may get even better

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

And what’s the absolute most crazy thing is we have beaten the current 1,2,4, and 6th ranked team in the nation. So fucking bizarre.

This looks to be headed towards the third tourney in the last 4 that KU doesn't get out of the first weekend. The lone break from that trend was when we had several guys together at the same time that could shoot and make threes in Agbaji, Braun and Martin.

I think maybe this is correct.
shooters disappear.

Too bad the tourney can’t be in AFH.
We don't have any real shooters.

How did we get to this place?

No such thing as a defacto championship to me. The tournament didn't happen.

Great year, but an incomplete year.

But we were the national champs in 2020 and 2022 so that’s decent.

They'll win their first game but I have concerns against whatever they face in the Round of 32. They'll either be a 3 seed and get a 6 seed or a 4 seed and get a 5.

What have they done away from AFH would make you pick this team to go to the Sweet Sixteen?

but it matters…the roster was the strongest and most productive in the country that year, and in no way supports your insinuation of some kind of trend

KU would probably have 8+ national titles if every tourney was canceled and they awarded a "de facto national title" to whoever was the best regular season team.

I’d bet 100 bucks on KU making the S16 though bc we will be a higher seed.

How many times does the best regular season team also win the tourney? Maybe half?

not a damn thing

i said weeks ago that i didn’t think they’d make it out of the first weekend

but i’m not about to connect dots that aren’t there. the tourney is a crap-shoot…the best team in the country likely doesn’t even win it the majority of the time. how we do in it, just doesn’t make or break the season for me

It appears that the wiser move would have been to sit McCullar for seed preservation purposes. Because if we drop to the 4/5 line, which we should, I don’t like us to get to the S16.

Yes, it matters.

But it's not a championship.

And when you're talking about Self then it's the elite of the elite that he is compared to. K has 5 nattys. Roy 3. Calhoun 3. Pitino 2. Self 2. Wright 2. Calipari 1.

Nobody is giving Self an extra just because Covid happened.

That team was largely better than any team in the field by all metrics.

They finished AP 1st which before usually meant nat champ.

The leap isn’t huge.
I get why you might not care but also were the best.
