I hope Samford shoots 3’s like UNc did at end of that game, and not like waaaaaaaaaaay too many opponents have against us this year.

I know this is somewhat standard stuff but fucking Bill Self in the first play all of the players moving to the right spots.

Dave setting a pic and knowing that Manek would roll with him giving him a better matchup.
Wilson seeing that happened and getting the ball to a better angle where Dave was going to angle his post to.
Wilson casually drifting off the ball and circling to the rebound.
Braun knowing exactly what was gonna happen and just fucking speeding like a demon for the rebound if necessary.
And Ochai just being all decoy because UNC probably thought it would go to him.

Masterful.

Same.
But Kansas was the 20th best team in the nation at defending the 3 that season.
This season, 165th.

For me that season was the last breath.
Upperclassmen, multiple ones from Kansas, and a dude who went through a ton of shit but stuck with Kansas til his senior year and hit the game winning shot to win a National Title in the biggest comeback on that stage.

So glad i'll always have that before CBB dove head first into pro sports.

Not by me.
You all were far too harsh on him.

I'll remember a senior who hit the game tying and then game winning shot in the National Title, leading our team in points in a double double and guarding UNC's best player, after putting up 25 and 9 in the freaking Final Four game.

I would take senior Dave one million times over Hunter.
It wouldn't even cross my mind, it'd be an instant come on down DMac.
Even assuming that DMac was as pure as the driven amateur snow (I would NOT recommend googling this phrase, and I don't think we should casually assume these things anyway), the fact is that from the start of his sophomore year and forward he was...consistently good. He was consistently good.

Consistently better than, say, peak Lucas, but he never did leap to the level of, say, Withey or any of our other elite centers (Cole, Embiid, Udoka).

I stand by what I said: he underperformed his ability, right up until he didn't, and he will rightly be remembered warmly for his very peak coming in massive massive games: a Big 12 season finale we needed for a share (and won), a Big 12 tournament title game we won and a Final Four we won.

I'm curious how you know that?
Didn't read your post til just now. I just remember watching an episode with him at a football game with 2 completely different teams playing. He was wearing a racoon coat and yelling "go Rutgers!"

Interesting tidbit on Backus by the way. But, I know, I digress. Happens when you're old.

I appreciate them editing out the part when Harris caught the inbounds pass and stepped on the sideline for a crucial turnover, giving UNC another shot at OT.
One of those disaster fuck-ups that's (happily) lost to history.

One thing DMac is better than Hunter at by a good amount?
Footwork.

Hunter doesn't really need as much footwork to do his thing and he's a much better finisher when close but DMac learned a lot while here and got extremely good in that department. Watch that first play and just his feet. First the movement to shake Manek enough off the ball. After the rebound he slides his foot in order not to travel then gets that bounce to establish position again, pivots to space through his defenders, and takes the final step he needs for the shot.

Then watch the second shot v Manek. Gets pushed off the ball and he knows he's down to his last step so keeps his pivot foot locked but takes the steps he needs to push Manek off a bit, does so, takes that dribble and sinks it.

I could watch that forever.

Also, i'm in a full over analyze zone but look ( after Dave temporarily looses which man to guard - oh god i gotta get over there ) on the UNC possession after Dave's 2nd shot - that fucking lock of a switch from Ochai/Jalen.

Jalen not for one moment fooled and instantly presses out -- probably forcing that 'settle' of a shot.

That's just one play of course but it shows that team had no issues defending the perimeter.

( also lol in the chaos Manek is wide open under the basket - woulda been a tough pass but he's all - please, i'm wide open )

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

I remember screaming at my TV in disbelief, just knowing that UNC was going to swish a 3.

That was another "very controversial" thing I did this on this board. Defend David McCormack in 2022, before the tournament, when he was the whipping boy of the message board

Kept saying we would miss him when he was gone and people would come around. (Then we started a 6'6 dude at center the next year lol)

I think Vick is a good example of trying be objective vs subjective.

I objectively understand Hunter is a top notch college player.
I subjectively can't stand the dude.

We had a long thread about whether Vick was a good player - or at least an above average player under Self.
All the stats pointed to that.
I didn't like Vick but if there was a mob of people here saying Hunter WASN'T a great player ( different from saying he lacks effort ) i'd defend him just on a facts/statistics basis.

No. Unfortunately, though, our other bigshot portal recruit did.
