and granted, some of that is absolutely on Self and the staff. but, it’s also a hell of a confluence of bad luck
It was bad luck, yes. But it's really not GREAT that we're having the exact same conversations today as we were having at this time in 2019. I'm aware that we've had 1.5 title-ish things since then, but it's pretty goddamn obnoxious that we made the same mistakes in such a short time period later.
To be fair, that was five years ago. If your expectation is that the team only has one season in every 10+ where the roster construction isn't elite then it speaks to the outrageous run of consistent excellence that KU is in the midst of.

I mean, "isn't elite" is about the very NICEST way to describe 2018-19's and 2023-24's roster construction.

I also don't think 22-23 was elite.

Somewhat a tangent here but it's been mentioned several times over these boreds that teams that feature bigs aren't built to be title contenders.

Counter point : Purdue and NC State.

It wasn't elite when compared to Self's prior rosters but it was elite compared to a standard D1 roster.

I have a hard time calling that team elite. They had a very good year. But any team with Kj Adams starting at the 5 has a hard time making the elite category for me.

I'd say the top 2-3 percent would be considered elite.
I think that was a top 10 team in the nation but not top 5, let's put it in the middle at 7th-8th best.
That's top 2% in D1.

I would consider that elite.

******
Ah I thought we were talking about the title winning team not 23.
OK, perhaps not quite elite, no.
I think the title team was juuuuuust barely elite.
2023 was just barely not.

For that matter, neither was 21-22!

That's sort of my point. The complaint isn't that roster construction wasn't elite this year. It's that it was straight-up bad.

i really think tunes would be different had 1) arterio not fucked up, and/or 2) Timberlake would’ve produced at the level that was anticipated

imagine just having Timberlake have a season like knecht or spencer
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Guttermetery, but I kinda wonder how we’d remember 22 if not for one of the best bracket draws ever.

Off the top of my head like 16-9*-10-11-2*-9?

Heck, I still wonder how we’d remember 22 after loosing in the second round to a hobbled Creighton, but for Remy…

What exactly does a getting a mulligan mean? I think he’d have to have TWO more terrible (by our standards) seasons in a row before the seat would even begin to warm. But I definitely do not think he’s immune from harsh criticism.

it's possible the man just doesn't have the "fire in the belly" anymore.

i really wouldn't blame him. he has reached the pinnacle. he has made a fortune. he had a major health scare. who could blame him.
