Maybe. But I also feel like Bill would have taken Jay Wright’s exit if he wanted it. And he may yet - and that would greatly diminish him in my eyes.

It wouldn't for me.
It's possible he doesn't like the new environment.
It's also possible he is concerned the stress could lead to damaging his future health.

To me, bailing instead of figuring this out would be worrying about the mules instead of loading the wagon.
Re: NCAA Tournament 2024
Meh.
If I was a teacher and all of a sudden my students were more concerned with making money than learning the subject, and I didn't need to teach anymore, early retirement might be appealing.

Re: NCAA Tournament 2024
Which would be your prerogative.
And here, of course it’s Bill’s. But I would feel that taking that off-ramp would put a lot of what I thought about Bill’s competitiveness and hunger in a different light.
Which, maybe that’s a Fish problem, not a Bill problem. But it’s how I’d feel.
Re: NCAA Tournament 2024
Considering he's won at a .800 plus clip at Kansas, won 14 straight conference titles - a NCAA record, and has 2 National Championships, and now there was a major shift in the sport and his health, I might have to label that as a Fish problem, not a Bill problem.
Re: NCAA Tournament 2024
The issue is the “and” connecting “the sport and his health”. Frankly, I think it would be soft for him to temper tantrum his way out of the sport like Wright did, on the basis of the horror of the players finally getting paid. But my reasons for thinking that are well-trod around here, as are your reasons for feeling differently, so I’m not going to get into an argument over them. Fine for them to be a Fish problem.pdub wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 12:51 pm Considering he's won at a .800 plus clip at Kansas, won 14 straight conference titles - a NCAA record, and has 2 National Championships, and now there was a major shift in the sport and his health, I might have to label that as a Fish problem, not a Bill problem.

That's fair. I'd agree with that.pdub wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 11:38 am I'd say the top 2-3 percent would be considered elite.
I think that was a top 10 team in the nation but not top 5, let's put it in the middle at 7th-8th best.
That's top 2% in D1.
I would consider that elite.

Ah I thought we were talking about the title winning team not 23.
OK, perhaps not quite elite, no.
I think the title team was juuuuuust barely elite.
2023 was just barely not.

We could have gotten Spencer or knecht and there is no guarantee that they flourish here like they did at uconn and TennesseeKUTradition wrote: ↑Mon Apr 01, 2024 11:50 am i really think tunes would be different had 1) arterio not fucked up, and/or 2) Timberlake would’ve produced at the level that was anticipated
imagine just having Timberlake have a season like knecht or spencer
Self does not exactly create a very "nurturing environment" for freshman or transfers. I've seen too many come in confident and aggressive and within a matter of weeks their confidence has been broken while self bends them to his will
Knect or spencer come in here and start getting beat on defense or taking shots at the wrong point in the offense, and self might have been benching them too which fucks with a players psyche
Re: NCAA Tournament 2024
I counter your generic eye-rolling statement with how Bill Self transfers may or may not succeed with two transfers that were currently on our team this season who were both All American candidates.
We get it.
Yesufu shoulda been a starter for the NBA title winning Toronto Raptors.

One is mccullar, who arrived to Lawrence as an absolute stud defensively. Hes an exception there, most players don't show up at Kansas playing bill self level defense, in fact mccullar is the only one I can think of.
Self has always said you've gotta defend if you want to play, which I get. A defensive lapse gets you yanked faster than anything around here, always has. But in the transfer portal era, self might have to adjust to letting players play through their mistakes a little more. Teams are built around transfers now, and often you only have a year or 2 to get the most out of them

The other transfer you are referring to is hunter, who you've gone on daily rants about all season. Self recruited hunter with the intent of building his offense around him, which is also an exception when it comes to transfers. Hunter also single handedly ruined our defense, but the players at his position all transfered out after his commitment

Provides 2 examples of players THIS season that EXCELLED as transfers.
( and yes I don't/didn't like Hunter but go back and read the amount of times where i've called him an excellent CBB player )

It’s a good thing you didn’t go to business school.
Or, for that matter, law school.

Tarik Black was a successful transfer imo. Different times though.

I think it’s less whether they’re freshmen and/or transfers, and more whether they got game or they suck.
