Pettiford was 2 year.

Just trying to suss - is it more the player or the program if the program says “your starting spot is not guaranteed even if you started previously” and the player decides to find somewhere else he is more guaranteed to start?

If a one year guy like Pettiford is leaving Kansas, though i'd love for both parties to work together to stay, it's more understandable.
i don’t get that

it isn’t Self's job to coddle players. if KJ would rather go to a lesser program to be more of a star (presuming he’d be leaving because of a reduced role), that’s on him

it’s Self’s job to win

now, if you wanna say that maybe he shouldn’t have recruited KJ in the first place, then that’s a whole different conversation
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

If you're actively trying to bring in a transfer ( not a freshman ) to take the spot of a player like KJ I think that's shitty.

I understand that not doing that may ( emphasis on may ) be in the detriment of the program's ultimate success.

I do not care.

Or what if a program tells a player “your jumper just isn’t developed like we expected it would when we first signed you 3 years ago and we want someone who does have a J”

I have a hard time believing he wouldn't have been better than Elmarko this year.

Choose one!

A. KJ transfers, and we coincidentally sign a seasoned AA-talent forward outta the portal, (or vice versa on the sequence of events, don’t get caught on that here) who leads us to another natty in 25

- or! -

B. KJ returns, plays an even bigger role, and leads KU to “well 24 was supposed to be the worst season of Self’s KU career, but now it’s February 2025 and we’re looking like a conference bottom feeder who prob won’t even make the tournament”

I choose C which starts off like the first 2 words of B and then the rest is replaced with a more realistic scenario.

But isn't, "and excels in a smaller role" a very realistic rest of the scenario?

And what if that's what KU wants, but not what KJ wants?

If Ku recruits a guy better than KJ that could start over him, then whatever happens happens. I like KJ, I hope he stays. I hope he improves over the offseason. He's a really good player in a lot of ways. Good enough it's going to be hard to recruit another forward

But he's undersized and can't shoot, and that's a big limitation on the upside of next years team

What type of season do we think this lineup/rotation has:
Starters:
DH
Elmarko
McDowell
Kj
HD

Bench: Bidunga, Kugel, Clemence, Philon, Passmore

I don't think we'd be elite, but maybe not terrible?.... 4 seedish?
