How do you think it might be misapplied?

I believe the textbook definition is something like, manipulating someone in a way that makes them question their own reality. The manipulator is likely in a position of power or influence over the manipulated.
The most basic example is something like, "I think this." And the manipulator says, "no, actually, you think that!"
Or something like, "I feel like your decision is affecting me negatively." "NO you're just being too sensitive!"
But, it can often be more complicated, or more subtle, than that.

I think a guy claiming he is being gaslighted while acting like he is being reasonable while throwing crap against the wall is gaslighting.
