On this date 30 years ago...

Post by twocoach »

Truly one of the strangest single days of sports and sports celebrity infamy in our lifetimes.

https://www.cbssports.com/general/news/ ... car-chase/

All times Eastern.

9:07 a.m. Arnold Palmer tees off in his final U.S. Open round
10:17 a.m. Rangers' Stanley Cup Parade rolls through New York
11:09 a.m. Murder charges filed against O.J. Simpson
3:00 p.m. United States hosts its first World Cup match
4:55 p.m. LAPD press conference
8:06 p.m. Ken Griffey Jr. ties Babe Ruth with 30 home runs before June 30
8:56 p.m. Police pursuit of O.J. Simpson begins
9:00 p.m. NBA Finals Game 5: Knicks vs. Rockets
11:47 pm. LAPD takes Simpson into custody

So where were you one this day? I was actually in Los Angeles doing some training with a coach in the area. Someone brought a TV to the rink that night and most of us just hung out and talked about the crazy OJ Simpson situation playing out for the world to see. What a crazy day.

i was in school

teacher actually rolled an old school A-V unit into class so we could watch the pursuit
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

I was in middle school.
I WANT to say our teachers did the same ( I have a vague recollection of that happening ) and brought a A-V unit into the library, but man, that's pretty late to be in class in the state of Kansas, no?

That first game where Wynalda scored the incredible free kick to tie vs Switzerland - actually was on June 18th 1994.

Not soon after was the infamous own goal that sent USA through to the next round instead of Colombia which got that player killed when he returned home.

…that's pretty late to be in class in the state of Kansas, no?

maybe?

it was an afternoon English class at South Jr. High

i could easily be misremembering, and recalling watching part of the trial (with chase footage) instead

I'm guessing it was probably the trial.
I too have distinct memories of the chase footage, watching in middle school ( West Jr High ), but that timeline doesn't add up...West didn't have AC at the time, I don't think we'd have been in school that late in June.

I DO remember where I was only weeks later on the 4th of July 1994.

Beach house visiting my grandparents on the northern coast of Washington state...I distinctly remember watching USA vs Brazil where US just barely lost 1-0.

Before I clicked on the link I said to myself those can't be local times.
I was at home.

I added "All times Eastern" to it to avoid confusion.

Well, it does say all times Eastern in the link.
Main thing that stood out was I recall watching "the chase" and remembering it wasn't 1:47am (Chicago time) when they apprehended him.

I remember TRYING to watch the NBA Finals, on a tiny box in the corner of a screen focused on a white Bronco driving 40 MPH for 3 hours….with 4,500 police cars lined up and following.

Pissed me off.

I thought I was watching the Blues Brothers in slow motion

I never understood why the police didn’t simply block the road.

A.C. never struck me as dedicated to O.J. enough to ram police cruisers
