Welcome David Coit
Welcome David Coit
21 ppg scorer from northern illinois. Only 5'11 but lighting quick, can create his own shot and hard to contain off the dribble. Will be his last year of college eligibility
Re: Welcome David Coit
As a junior with the Northern Illinois program last season, Coit averaged 20.8 points per game on 40.7 percent shooting from the floor and 33.7 percent shooting from the field. He also chipped in with 3.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. Over the course of the 29-game season, Coit notched 20-plus points on 16 occasions. His top four scoring outputs (37, 35, 34, 32) were all in road games. He was held to single-figure scoring only once all season.
Following the announcement that Coit had signed with the program, head coach Bill Self gave his thoughts on the addition of the guard and what the Jayhawks are getting.
"David can shoot; he has range," Self said. "He's a player who can score the basketball. He averaged 21 points this past year at Northern Illinois. I see him as a guy that gives us a whole different dimension that we may not have had he not signed with us."
Coit made three or more 3-point attempts in 18 games last season. He was a better 3-point shooter away from home (35.4 percent on 10.9 attempts) than he was at home (31 percent on 9.1 attempts).
As a transfer, Coit is rated as a three-star prospect in the 247Sports rankings. He is the No. 418-ranked transfer overall and the No. 69-ranked point guard transfer in the portal.
With Coit now officially set to join the program. The Jayhawks have 13 scholarship players on the roster. KU has five incoming transfers, two true freshmen and six returning players.

Re: Welcome David Coit
40.7 and 33.7 at Northern Illinois doesn't immediately trigger 'he can shoot' at this level ( Nick Timberlake shot 42% 3FG at Towson and that didn't translate down well ) but that's Bill Self being Bill Self.
Re: Welcome David Coit
yea, it struck me too as coach's talk.
Plus, our track record for mid-major scoring guard transfers ain't great.
I dunno if much will really be expected of this dood tho. Prob single-digit minutes per game, right?
If his role is little more than come in for a few possessions with/against the second unit and chuck just enough 3s to keep the opposing D on its toes, that role's still prob worth a scholly this year, particularly considering the makeup of the roster overall.

Re: Welcome David Coit
also, considering it's already the middle of August, landing this guy is not bad/maybe even actually pretty good in a "best available" kinda way.

Re: Welcome David Coit
There is a ruling coming down that is going to end scholarship limits and effectively nullify our scholarship penalty that we were preparing for.
So we had a use it or lose it scholarship. This kid isn't going to play unless DH or Shak Moore get hurt.
The ruling will probably be the end of walkons at schools like Kansas.

Re: Welcome David Coit
yea.
I kinda wonder what the scholarship strategy for this season was all along.
Like, whether the plan was to use them all up this year either way, prior to Elmarko's injury throwing a monkey wrench into the gears of the roste-rbuilding process.

Welcome guy who's last name is somewhat similar to Koita. As in Aba Kiota.
That's all I have to contribute to this thread.
Have a nice day.

Re: Welcome David Coit
Wish he was bigger, wonder what he's like defensively. Doubt he plays much, but bringing in a proven experienced scorer for depth is a nice luxury
Re: Welcome David Coit
I'd rather have a freshman (labaron philon) who intends to stick around for 3-5 years as the guy on the end of the bench, than a undersized 1 year mid major rental. But those days are probably a thing of the past.

Re: Welcome David Coit
Same.
I wonder if he regrets his decision to leave. I have to imagine so. Had he stayed he'd be penciled in as backup PG with a really nice path to starting in year 2.
Maybe he's going to get that same path at Bama. But when it comes to basketball/coaching/development, Bama ain't KU.
Re: Welcome David Coit
Self sat a player for a semester for getting a DUI.
I don't think he'd play a player, even his best player, associated with a murder for a full season.

Re: Welcome David Coit
Absolutely not.
You are talking about the Bama kid from last year, right? Or did I miss some Labaron Philon drama?
Re: Welcome David Coit
Brandon Miller, the person who brought a murderer the gun that was involved in the murder.
Re: Welcome David Coit
Face Ass?
A big part of getting a full semester is cuz his DUI happened during the entire team already being on lockdown for the football fight.

Not responding to draw a substantial equivalency between the magnitude of the situations, but - let's be honest, Brady got Cleveland Stated a bit there. For effect.
Re: Welcome David Coit
Perhaps.
But Silvio got 12 games for picking up a chair after some ksu player in white jeans came off the bench and started a fight.
Giving someone a gun that ends up killing someone, 0 games, or picking up a chair, 12.
