I agree. That's basically what I meant by "the experience". It'd be refreshing to be reassured that kind of stuff still matters to some kids.KUTradition wrote: ↑Wed Aug 07, 2024 7:08 pm or maybe he just wants to know what it feels like to play in the Phog and at a place like KU
there’s something special about that court. playing on it is an experience in and of its self

and yes, it’d be quite refreshing
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Huh. There was a dude with the same name at one of the Shawnee Mission schools who used to be one of my main rivals in my high school days. Chess.

I wonder if Bill perceives how much less anticipation* there is for basketball, in the portal era. And now with football being very very good.
* My gameday and in-season level of interest hasn’t changed, but I don’t care NEARLY as much from May-October as I used to. Part of that is just getting older, too.

I had the thought last night that I wonder in 5 years if KU will be an ACTUAL football school.jfish26 wrote: ↑Sat Aug 24, 2024 8:48 am I wonder if Bill perceives how much less anticipation* there is for basketball, in the portal era. And now with football being very very good.

Not from the pro-athlete era we are now in, but more that we’ve stacked the conference with basketball so much, it will be harder and harder to win titles. Heck, it’s been harder since the streak ended.
That, coupled with a VERY middling group of football schools could lead KU to the promise land year in and year out in football.
Yeah, I know Bill Self and all, but this thought seemed logical when I had it last night.
As far as interest goes. I have almost zero offseason interest. In-season, it’s meh at best. I watched maybe 10 games last year in total, plus the two I went to.
It’s not the same sport I loved for so long. At least it doesn’t feel like it. And so much of sports fandom is based on feelings, it’s hard to ignore the meh.
Re: 2024/2025 Lineup
I have a few social groups, most real but also here!, that live and die with it. That’s what keeps it important for me. My level of interest is in the community of it.

Yeah, y’all Texas up Lawrence every season, that’s for sure.
All I mean by that is come into town and think you own the place. My favorite behavior is when people ask me where free parking downtown so they don’t have to pay a meter 25cents/15 minutes. Fuck off.
Also, fuck off im not telling you where I park for free, 3 blocks away, without having to go 4 hours early. Get dinged, your door.
Haha. That wasn’t at you personally, Fish, but I’m sure at least one member of your social circle would adhere to the stereotype.

Fish’s social circle?
Pretty sure that’s called a school.

Re: 2024/2025 Lineup
Seems like we're heading towards an existential question of why we like sports at all.
Community, as you mentioned, is 1a (I include family in that too). And - I get my neurotransmitters mixed up so not sure about accuracy, but - dopamine is 1b. Whatever it is that you get when your team does something good relative to expectations.
And then there's the distant third of watching people do something incredible that you could never do.
I suppose there's also a nostalgic aspect as well, which is why I would think being a fairweather fan wouldn't have as much reward.
Kansas basketball still hits all of these for me. I don't get into the recruiting and off-season stuff as much, but that's probably because, ya know, kids and stuff that are higher priority

Re: 2024/2025 Lineup
I would put my level of enthusiasm for KU basketball at an overall 7 since David McCormack hit the game winning shot in the title game - of which that season was probably a 9. 7 is still pretty high in the scheme of things but the Chiefs ( 10 ), USMNT ( 10 ), Celtics ( 8 ) and even KU FB ( 8 ) have leap frogged it.
Perhaps it is partly because some of those sports are either the best of the best or because they are underdogs...but in reality I think KU basketball is part of a select few programs that are like the Yankees and Dodgers of baseball - big spenders - and that's gross to me.

Re: 2024/2025 Lineup
My interest in KUBB is still #1 of all the college/professional sports. My kids football basketball volleyball and golf all interest me more, at this stage in life, though.
But if it was a 9.9/10 for most of my life, it's now closer to to an 8.8/10. I care. But I don't live and die by it as much.
