Things That Annoy Me

while I generally agree, and had a mother who was an English teacher and a grandfather who was an English professor.....proper usage and pronunciation were paramount.

However, there are some incorrectly pronounced words that are sort of like Americana.

For instance, I grew up (grandparents from the other side) saying crick instead of creek. I know it's wrong, but it seems so weird to me to hear it in it's proper form.

My dad pronounced it crick. He also referred to seeing a movie as "Going to the the ATE er to see a show."

And of course there was a big ole R in wash and Washington. ( Mrs. 99 has a slight speech impediment, she pronounces is whoosh. Kinda cute if you ask me.)

Dad also said messourah.

I have trouble pronouncing anemone.

Mrs. Fish pronounces "crayon" as "crown" and I still look at her like she's grown a third arm every time.

Cloths. Do you pronounce the th or does it sound like close? I pronounce it close, but I'm probably wrong.

Cloths or clothes?

BUD is from Maine so she pronounces room like 'rum' ( or broom like brum ).
She also says 'wait on line' rather than 'wait in line'.
Finally, camp up here is just second homes/vacation homes, not like an actual camp.

Assuming "clothes", my pronunciation does have a slightly-perceptible th - CLO-thz.

that's not wrong though, that's how I've said it my whole life. Maybe it's a Midwest thing.

and that’s obviously ok. my wife does too (along with a whole bunch of other words as well)

knowing and acknowledging it says to me it’s neither due to laziness or ignorance

the only time i’ve been particularly bothered by that word is when news anchors have botched it

Yea.
It's camping.
But you don't go camping when you go 'upta camp'.

Going upta camp very likely means you're going to a house not used as a primary residence...though it's possible that your 'camp' ( other property ) doesn't have a house on it and maybe you're actually camping there. Our family has a 'camp' a little under 3 hours away - never would I ever have described a cape-cod 4 BR as a camp.

We are going camping at Sebago Lake in 2 weeks ( real camping, in a tent ).
We are headed to camp the week after that ( not at all camping ).

Almost equally confusing - an Italian sandwich here is any sandwich with cold cuts.
So if I order an Italian, I'm not getting what I'd expect, which is a sandwich with meats like salami, soppressata, pepperoni and provolone...instead you get asked what kind of Italian you want.
( like ordering a Coke in the South - 'sure what kind?' )

I could get a roast beef sandwich with cheddar and it'd be an Italian - I think it just can't be hot and needs the right type of roll ( longer and not a bun or sliced loaf bread ).

I loved camping in Colorado. I couldn’t imagine camping in this area most of the year. Icky.

We used to camp out at Clinton all the time. Rock Bottom I think was the name of the area. It was OK, a good excuse to cook outside and get gushered.
