Away/Neutral Fans - Best/Worst

Post by pdub »

What is your worst experience at a game in a neutral/away spot with opposing fans?
What is your best?

KC playing @ Balty reminded me of when a few buddies and I drove down from NYC for game 2 in 2014 vs the Orioles. Despite coming in KC gear, they were extremely respectful. There was maybe a couple light hearted boos but after KC won, we got a few 'good lucks' etc.

This was not my nicest fan experience though - that was in 2007/08 when I went to a KU game @ Boston College where their fans were actually cheering for us during the game and before and after there were 'you're gonna win it all' kind of compliments.

My worst was actually at Madison Square Garden ( which is saying a lot bc i've been to away ksu/mizzou games ) around Kentucky fans ( kind of by accident got in a pocket that was largely UK fans ). Obnoxious. Angry. Mean. Violent threats. Absolute trash fan base.

I hate Mizzou fans and hate all things Mizzou and if I was being subjective, i'd just say Mizzou.
But those Kentucky fans that particular night was the worst collective group of fans i've been around.

Mizzou fans were starting fights in AFH when I was a kid. So they top the list. But Richmond Spider fans were awful and aggressive at a neutral site (Alamo Dome).

Are we talking the 2012 Natty ( you were there? ) or the 2011 game in NYC?

I don't get it. I have been around (and interacted with) Kentucky fans at least 5 times.
Never had a problem with them. For some reason it seems many/most other KU fans have had issues with them.

One of my dearest friends was a Kentucky fan. From a certain demographic they are friendly and tolerable. There is the dark couch burner side though. Richmond fans are all couch burners. Home, neutral and away.

Probably because of your close personal relationship with Tubby, duh.

Probably because they think/know I'm Tubby.
Truth be told, there is a small part of me that is jealous of those who have had negative interactions with Kentucky fans.

Responding to pdub's question, BIG differences if I am representing the teams I support - or not.
I'm not giving his question much thought but In my per capita experiences, Davidson fans have to be near the top if not at the top in terms of worst when I was representing KU.
Best away/neutral fans? Hard to say. I had a lot of fun with LSU Baseball fans at the 2000 College World Series. Do they count?

Kentucky basketball fans are a lot like how I see NFL fanbases.

The tribalism is extra thick. And obnoxious.

I lived amongst them, I only ran into a couple obnoxious fans.
Defense. Rebounds.
