Thanks pdub, but considering what they were predicting, we were incredibly lucky. Still no power and barely any internet, but that’s nothing. Lots of debris to deal with, but that’s nothing in comparison, either. Thank you to everyone for the kind thoughts, it was a special kind of strange to wonder if my house and everything I own would still be there this morning.

Hope I never have that feeling again, but it is Florida.

Through Salida then?

If I was heading out this weekend it would be the Salida/Poncha Pass route. The Walsenburg/La Veta Pass looks to be getting snow.

I have driven over La Veta in white out blizzards a couple of times. It sucks. The road has a number of big downhill curves on the west side of the pass, there are usually vehicles in the ditch along those, but most people drive more cautiously. Often the snow is on one side of the Sangres and not on the other. So vacationers from the flatlands to the east come over the pass going 80 mph hour and go west from sunshine to white out blizzard in about 1 mile stretch and go straight into a big downhill curve. They are in the last couple of hours of a 12 hour drive and they are anxious to get "there" before dark. You can guess the rest.

The Poncha Pass stretch is more straight except for a couple of big curves on the north approach. The worst wrecks are on the straight stretches. Someone gets over confident due the road being straight, and there are a couple of deadly head on collisions up there every year. This time of year with the days being shorter and the elk herds on the move, we only cross during the day. Nothing scarier than coming around a curve and seeing 20 elk in your headlights crossing the highway ahead and blocking the road. Stopping and spending the night in the Springs is nice anyway. We can have dinner at Cerberus and look up at Pikes Peak.

Be careful out there, it's a wilderness. Both passes do not have a town of any size for 20 miles plus in either direction. And if it gets bad, the snow plows stop running after dark for driver safety. You might be on your own for 12 hours.

Yeah, La Veta gets some pretty strong wind action too….making bad conditions worse than they look for folks that don’t understand what mountain passes do with weather.

Wolf Creek ski area opens tomorrow

I read where they got 26 inches over the weekend on Wolf Creek Pass. We had a house a decade ago in Pagosa. We would drive out for Thanksgiving and winterize the house, drain the plumbing and turn down the heat and leave for 4 months. I don't miss that. I came back in April one year and there was a 24 inch thick layer of ice on the back (north) deck that blocked the door. I spent half a day back there with a breaker bar and a sledge hammer opening it up. Getting back inside after 4 months of having the place sealed up was no fun. It's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there.
