Re: Cats
Cat's are generally pretty awesome. If they're less than warm, it's b/c they're victimized by a great many humans. Ferals especially so, b/c threats abound and life is short and hard.
If a cat doesn't have a nuturing home, they have to be on defense constantly.
I love kitties.

I'm sympathetic to this.

Re: Cats
My cat rules.
He’s independent.
He kills mice around our house ( and inside when they get in ).
He does silly shit sometimes when he’s in a mood. He sleeps at our feet in the winter.
He’s nice maybe 20 percent of the time and does his own thing the rest.

Re: Cats
This is why your cat rewards you with the occasional mouse. You know the rules. You follow them. Good owner. I say this with two cats. Two dogs. The dogs are all-in on helping. The cats are basically managers.
Re: Cats
some are better than others.
Is a lot of it how they're raised? Or certain breeds or certain something?
My grandma had a cat that would just hide all the time. She said it would come out when only she was around, but that's it.
My ex gf had two cats that were both pretty rad. They'd hide when new people came over, but a few minutes later would come out and expect all the attention. Chloe was a big fat potato with exactly one brain cell. She would sit in your lap purring for hours. Fluff was a fluffy Maine coon looking ninja assassin of a house pet. Would chase a laser pointer for hours. Both would very lovably snuggle up and spoon you in the mornings.
My best friends have 3 cats. Tigger is an all-white geriatric that's deaf as eff (apparently nearly all white cats end up deaf or with other genetic-related issues). Binx is a tuxedo named after that cat from Hocus Pocus. "Kitten" is a runt of a siamese/ragdoll mix of a designer-breed-born-street-cat that just walked up to their porch trick-or-treating last halloween. It's a gorgeous little creature, but annoying as shit, mostly cuz they haven't had her fixed yet, and she's like constantly in heat.
I have this dumb desire to have a pet bobcat. Like if you could somehow raise one starting from a little kitten, somehow knowing it would be docile, so it would somehow make for a serviceable house pet.
Of course, that desire is prob a slippery slope, as it would snowball into a desire to collect other large cats as pets. I saw this documentary about it one time, and it's like totally cool, big cats always make good pets that never start other problems, and the folks who collect big cats are in no way all total psychos, every last one of them, it'll be chill I swear, and there's zero chance I end up at a two-bit zoo in rural Oklahoma addicted to meth and gay.
Also, isn't Snowball the name of the cat on The Simpsons?

Re: Cats
I more meant it’s really not that big a deal. Just don’t shine the light straight in their eyes ( hopefully goes without saying ).

https://bottletreeanimalhospital.com/bl ... -for-dogs/
it's similar for cats because they can't catch it...theres nothing to satisfy their prey drive. It can lead to frustration and basically make them spastic.
Just Ledoux it
Re: Cats
theres some debate about it's impact on cats (definetely bad for dogs) but I've had vets specifically call it out as an issue and not to do it.

Re: Cats
speaking of cats...my 21 toed black cat is missing. he's a fan favorite. Hopefully he returns. A year ago we had 7 cats running around. At the moment we're down to 2. Damn coyotes.
I had one disappear for over a month...come back for 3 days and disappear again. Haven't seen him since. Hoping the black one is around in the morning looking for breakfast.

It's been a couple of years, but we had a big storm in Lexington, the power went out and I went outside.
The cat got out and went missing for two weeks. My daughter was more than freaked out. We never let the cat out at all. We figured she was coyote food.
One night I heard her meowing outside. Cat was back, kid was relieved. Not sure how she survived, but she did.
