what trappers carry a sheet of plywood around with them? and whose carrying s sheet of plywood a mile or two down a trail?

Anyway, some guys carry the loop, catch release poles. Thats a good option in a more urban area. If its a dog I'll find a way to release it. that's pretty rare out here. Although I caught my own dog once.


I need to get more skins tanned up before I do anything, but I'd like to make a coyote vest or coat, and a blanket. there also fantasia insulators for insides of hats etc

Catch pole os easier and i think easier because you can immobilize the animal.

Also, bigger question. Why is she letting bobcat go? They are one of thr most sought after pelts around...all trappers want bobcats in their sets.

She says the shield has a calming effect on a trapped animal too. Once they don't see the human behind it, they aren't as freaked out as seeing a human the entire time, and also getting a pole loop around their neck.

It's kinda nice to hear traps are designed to be more humane, with shock absorbing springs and such. But still, I bet it's awful stressful on an animal, and when it's jumping around panicking with its paw in a trap, prob prone to injury either way.

also, pretty sure TDub is already partnered up, but if not, we can only imagine that gal would make for some mighty fine wifey material otherwise.

I'm still not carrying a shield around....maybe that makes me an asshole...I dunno.

I will say a couple things about traps and animals.

- as with any hunting/fishing/outdoor sport it is, of course, not ideal for the animal and I'm sure there is stress of some sort. I'm sure th fish is stressed when its hooked, dragged out of the water while fighting and then held where it can't breathe for awhile before being released back into the water.

- I caught my dog...long story short...he got snagged in a foothold and sat out there overnight. I went and released him the next morning obviously. He had a sore paw for a couple hours then was back to his normal self.

- id wager more animals suffer and die unnecessarily from hunters who tske poor shots and wound the animal and then either can't or don't go find it.

- In general, I find trappers to be more animal welfare conscious than most of your once a year weekend hunters.

- there is always far far less trappers around than there are hunters. These days trappers are a dying breed, not something a lot of people do anymore on any level.

Then I realize maybe I got that wrong. And lord knows I've been wrong before!

Then I realize, oh wait, it's the animal fur that goes inside the hat.

you don't need to wear camouflage when trapping.....your target is stuck..your not stalking it

The game is understanding the patterns of the animal, reading the signs and tracks, and being able to make a set thats attractive enough that they can't resist despite their concern (no matter what you do they know you've been around )

in fact, most rifle hunters don't need camo. In all honesty it's really only archery hunters and maybe deer stand guys that don't move all day that came is actually helpful I wear a cheap camo jacket when I rifle hunt becauee i walk around a lot but usually just jeans or carharrt pants.

My grandpa used to hunt in a red flannel jacket.

And the irony of all the fancy camo is, then you gotta cover it in a bunch of hi-vis safety orange too...but I think that depends on the season and the state and such.

Orange is only required by juvenile hunters. At least in most states

In CO, hunters are required to wear at least 500 square inches of orange or pink, including headwear that's visible from every direction, for firearms seasons. Not archery tho.

I have an orange hat I'll wear as a CYA sorta thing when I'm fishing on public land during hunting season. I'll encounter hunters around so I do it just in case.

I still get nervous about the idea of some trigger happy dood who just like sees movement along a creek or something and starts blasting.
