.
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

1 and 2 were John Wall and Boogie.

(That's Demarcus Cousins, for anyone who isn't familiar with baller nicknames)

And once Cal left Memphis and X was back on the market at the eleventh hour we basically swapped him for like 13ish ranked Born Ready

(That's Lance Stephenson, for those whose baller nicknames are not, um, prepared from birth)

I remember X's debut he had like 26 points and looked amazing and thinking we finally won the one-and-done lottery. Then he just kinda spent the rest of the season on cruise control.
I remember how that raised expectations and he set an impossibly high bar for himself the rest of the season.

Yea.

I liked him. He was exciting to sign, and to watch for a year.

If I recall his pro career was stymied by injuries, which is a bummer.

I believe I was at that Selby game with and thanks to Defixione, and you're right.

I vividly remember that Selby game.
I was watching in an Aspen resort's lobby.

He was so naturally talented.

A bit of bad luck with injuries, but also have to wonder how hard of a worker he was. He never turned out to be what people thought he might become.

I was at the Selby debut. The atmosphere was litttt. We randomly had tickets for the usc match up, it was 9 or so games into the season, so we had know way of predicting that would be the Selby debut. There was a lot of hype. But most his scoring was simply knocking down open shots. He was feeding off the energy of the fieldhouse and playing with confidence. He did hit that clutch 3 at the end of regulation

Yep, talent is only a fifth of the basic equation. Lots more subcategories but this covers 95% of it.

1) Talent
2) Genetics - better be a +5 in some other thing on this list if you're 5'6" or weigh 120
3) Mental Processing - between the ears skills doomed many
4) Drive - if you don't have the "Want to" it doesn't matter what else you have
5) Health - some bodies are more predisposed to avoiding injuries and some of it is just good or bad luck

At the time I thought Selby was poised to dominate all season, but in hindsight, his "dominance" against usc was a little exaggerated. Same as Quentin Grimes in the champions classic

Selby had a bad set of circumstances. Missing time to start the season and then again with injuries. Hard for a freshman to find a rhythm like that. Wish he would have come back

Yea.

It’s the standard-issue message board sentiment, for better or worse, and not that it’s necessarily fair. It prob isn’t. It’s just that fans want a scapegoat.

Grown ass adults playing for a decade+ in the NBA at times have games where they just don't have it. But we as fan(atic)s always claim we would "give every ounce of ourselves to play for the team we love". It's a combination that is destined to clash and leave some fans at least momentarily disappointed. It's fine, we all live to see another day. Fandom...

Yea.

I would def give every ounce of myself to play for the team I love.

But since I have yet to…I’m technically undefeated?

Go ahead and take that to the GOAT thread.
