Re: NCAA 2024/2025
Jon Scheyer is 54-18. Thats a 75% win percentage. That's really good.
He's 37 years old. He's already been to an elite 8. He's won an ACC tournament.
He's brought in multiple insane recruiting classes. 2025 looks good too.
Hard to identify a better young coach, who has been mentored by one of the greatest CBB coaches of all time.

Re: NCAA 2024/2025
we'll see if he can keep it up.
I guess the Dook brand and K connections are worth quite a bit as far as recruiting equity, cuz I dunno how else a rookie coach would pull it off.

I like Hurley's philosophy on a lot of this stuff. I like how he runs practices.
He's become a lot more likeable over the years.

Duke's alumni is full of the mega rich who can chip in, no problem, to help pay 5 million to get a dude to play a season.

Meanwhile, most "name" schools have their share of "mega rich" who can chip in, no problem.
Tell me why they aren't as successful as Duke.

New President - New Gutter. I am going to pledge my allegiance to Donald J. Trump and for the next 4 years I am going to be an even bigger asshole than I already am.

Duke Kansas and UConn are at the top of college basketball right now.RainbowsandUnicorns wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2024 5:04 amThis.

Money alone doesn't mean those other "name" schools can compete consistently with the top schools for players.
Also, I didn't realize until looking that Scheyer has been on the Duke staff for a really long time. He's been working the recruiting circuit for a decade as an assistant. Then he became associate HC in 2018 and got 4 seasons in that role before taking over for K.
Not a big Duke fan here, but their succession plan was executed perfectly. Replacing K is no small task. I hope Kansas does something similar.

Yes, "Money alone doesn't mean those other "name" schools can compete consistently with the top schools for players". But.... No doubt money is important/helps.DeletedUser wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2024 5:14 amDuke Kansas and UConn are at the top of college basketball right now.RainbowsandUnicorns wrote: ↑Sun Nov 03, 2024 5:04 amThis.

Yes, their succession plan was executed - extremely well. But.... There were possible what ifs that fortunately for them did not happen.
Yes, it's kind of crazy to me that I like Jon Scheyer as a person, I like him as a coach, and I respect the success of the Duke program. But.... I hope they lose pretty much every game they play.

Re: NCAA 2024/2025
Dukes alumn are notoriously rich.
Re: NCAA 2024/2025
yea.
They consistently have a shitload of talent.
Pretty sure there was an analysis a few years back that even K had consistently underperformed relative to the talent he had.
Kinda makes you wonder how much of dook's success with K or Scheyer is cuz of good coaching, or cuz they're just basically an NBA farm team.
Then again, Kentucky was basically an NBA farm team too but Cal still manage to loose in the first round a bunch anyway.

Today's hot take is that coach K isn't actually that good of a coach?

Re: NCAA 2024/2025
Quitters update from last night:
Zuby 5pts 1reb 21min. Started.
Udeh 13pts 12rebs 1blk 19min. Started.
Mj Rice isn't playing basketball this year. He quit NC State (officially?) after the portal closed. So he has to sit out the 24/25 season if he's going to play college basketball again. Really weird situation.

does he even pay attention…at all?
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?
Re: NCAA 2024/2025
Remember back 15 years ago when college basketball was good and fun AND ESPN had the 24 hour college basketball marathon?
I'd take that day off.
It was glorious.

He was mentored by and learned to coach from one of the greatest college basketball coaches of all time.
Recruiting and coaching are different. Yes.
But it doesn't matter how well you can coach if you can't recruit. You've got to have the horses. And at Duke, Scheyer is getting elite players.
I don't necessarily think it'll translate to a bunch of national titles, but they'll be a contender almost every year.

yea, we'll see.
Pretty sure there's two sides to that coin tho too - it also doesn't matter how well you can recruit if you can't coach.
Scheyer's got the horses, and has done well enough so far. Time will tell if he can get them to the promised land.
