They didn't do it (sag off) last night. Not sure if that's a scouting miss or a choice.

...but we've already made a noticeable adjustment. He rarely was getting the ball at the top of the key last night (where they can drop/sag and help on Hunter). He was getting it on the move inside the 3pt line where they can't drop/sag and was being used as a ball mover. He's looking to shoot almost none and we are going to use him as a facilitator for HD even doing some high low last night (those two have great chemistry together)....and he was moving the ball well getting us 3pt shots.

We are going to shoot a lot of 3s. We shot under 18 3s per game last year, which was like 330th-something in the country. I bet we are in the 24ish range this year.

Well that's Howard. A team that knows they aren't about to win. It's early in the season, why would they waste perfectly good reps playing funky defense in a game they won't win

this is good hoops bored talk.

I like the idea of KJ getting the ball on the move in the arc.

if and when we see a zone, what do you think of KJ being the dood in the middle of it?

If he can make a few free throw line jumpers, sure.

To be honest, between HD down low as a scoring threat and/or Bidunga in there as a lob threat at the 5, and then plus whatever shooters are in there (some combo of Mayo Griffen Storr DH Coit), I am not sure we will see much zone played against us. I think we'll shoot 3s against it. I think we'll get dunks/layups against it. It's hard to zone a 7'2 guy who can shoot who also has 2 or 3 legit 3pt threats out there with him.

I think the best way for teams to guard us is to have the guard depth to full court press DH and be physical with him, and have a 7ft big guy that can challenge HDs shots. Hope for bad shooting nights from Coit Mayo Griffen and Storr. Play man to man.

right on.

I'm pretty sure KJ CAN make a few free throw line jumpers, at least. At least enough to not sag off him at that spot.

but I was thinking KJ in the middle less for free throw line jumpers, and more just in a move the ball kinda way. Get it to him there, the D will have to collapse just enough, and he's a good enough passer to make a quick pass to whoever gets open enough from the movement on D.

I think your gameplan against DH is spot on. Play physical and pressure him. With HD, not many opponents will have a 7-footer to match, so I think it's more just play him as physically as you can too and hope you can prevent HD from comfortably getting to his spots.

KJ is perfect for middle of the zone buster. Cause can attack or pass at a high level. The key is for him to catch the ball close enough where he is a realistic threat to shoot that little push shot of his

yea, to shoot, or just to attack.

If he gets the ball at the FT line he's 2 dribbles tops away from an acrobatic layup or dunk.

He is? Where is HD in this scenario? If HD is near the basket it's not quite as easy as you're making it sound.

Yes, or far enough out that cutters have room or HD has room.

It's a give and take.

I suppose if KJ is the 5 he could potentially be alone in the middle with shooters on the perimeter, but I don't think that'll be something we see much, if at all.

If the zone is disciplined, then they shouldn't collapse on him unless he's a shooting threat. If they don't, it's still 4 v 4 on the perimeter and their defense is working.

I mean, I guess this scenario would be, among other potential details of each play, a matter of the right angle, and/or of Hunter having his dood pinned, and/or of Hunter stepping out as a threat to shoot, any/all of which may or may not be there.

but yea, I think HD being near the basket and KJ being near the basket too kinda created spacing issues last year, especially when combined with last year's lack of outside shooting.

Sounds like we've drifted away from reality and into fantasy land. Hunter probably isn't going to have someone pinned if the defense is playing a zone (and KJs at the free throw line looking to drive).

I think we're safe leaving some of this sort of analysis to Self and the experts on the staff.

Illy just can't not be condescending.

It's really not a big deal, except in that same sort of way one can't not look at a car crash.

I still find myself incredulous to the wreckage.

What's incredulous is two random people arguing over what would happen in hypothetical basketball plays with some sort of seriousness as if they know what the fuck they are talking about.
