Musicals
Musicals
So I got dragged into watching Hamilton last night.
I can really appreciate the level of execution it takes as far as production and performance and singing and writing and choreography and such.
But with that said…man, it’s hard to watch a musical.

It needs to be. If for no other reason than to say that not ALL musicals suck.

Re: Musicals
I like musicals, probably because they are more lyrics-forward than they are music-forward. I also like that they tend to be stylistically diverse, so you tend to get a mix of genres etc.
Re: Musicals
Ok if Blues Brothers counts as a musical then yea I like musicals.
Even if it’s to the exception of every other musical.
Blues bros is still more a movie script that happens to have musical scenes, rather than a more explicit musical script in which most or all of the storytelling is sung.
I think one thing that makes Blues Brothers so good/better than/the best musical is the music is blues, rather than the usual broadway pop sorta music you otherwise get with pretty much every other musical. That’s a matter of taste tho i guess.
Another big difference is Blues Bros has its origins in SNL humor, with SNL comedians acting. As such, it doesn’t seem to take it self too seriously, or expect the viewer to.
Contrast that with most other musicals, which are mostly done by theater kids - a demographic who takes themselves waaaay too seriously

Re: Musicals
Sure did.
I’m a fan of pretty much all the Trey Parker-universe humor, and assume I’d like the Book of Mormon too.
I find the humor to be a good mix of sharp wit, slapstick/deadpan/fart joke elements, and astute social commentary.
Comparatively, I thought Hamilton at least had music less humor, and the scenes that did prompt laughter felt almost canned.
Re: Musicals
One thing I DID like about Hamilton was how expectedly diverse the music was. It was often hip hoppy, and in a couple scenes they even properly rapped.
But, to again contrast with South Park humor, I thought it sort of lacked in social commentary, instead mashing up or just plain disregarding historical accuracies in favor of more so simply serving its own created story.
Or maybe it did and I missed it, cuz we all know how dumb I am!
Re: Musicals
Immigrants, we get the job done.
Re: Musicals
Oh yeah.
That was the one real commentary.
But then there’s the whole thing about demographically diverse actors/characters being portrayed as relative equals…in revolutionary war-era merica?!

Re: Musicals
I tend to agree, I can't sit through most of them. I do like Hair, cuz I'm an old hippy at heart. My oldest daughter and I watched "Fiddler on the Roof" because it's a classic and we felt obligated. Most depressing movie I ever saw. "Grease" is way too close to disco for me to sit through. I did watch "Rent" with my youngest daughter and hated every second of it.
I get that it takes a lot of talent write, produce and act/sing in one and I do not have that kind of talent so I shouldn't throw stones. I just can't sit through it.
Defense. Rebounds.

Re: Musicals
I say it all the time in regards to music but.....
If you can't appreciate Tommy (or other musicals) I can't help you.
Heck, American Utopia on Broadway was considered a musical.
Go to 5:18 and watch and learn how music and musicals mean different things to different people - and how they feel isn't wrong. So for those of you who don't like musicals - so be it - but I feel surely there has to be something you can find meaning in and enjoy. Maybe not. Oh well.
