Recruiting
Re: Recruiting
If he's most ready in decades can he beat:
16.3 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 3 APG, 1.7 SPG, 38% FG, 57% FG?

Re: Recruiting
Wonder if he shoots well enough to play alongside Bidunga next year?
Either way, with only Bidunga projected to be in the front court (maybe Clemence still has eligibility?), we have lots of playing time to offer at the 4 and the 5. Could be an awesome situation for him.

Eligibility Clemence has.
Ability... Hopefully last game was just a bad game

Re: Recruiting
He's been a disappointment. Self sort of talked him up this summer, which got me excited. But he just doesn't play well in games. He's not tough with the ball.
Even if we return Bidunga and Clemence, we're likely to have 2 or 3 fresh new faces in the front court. Either via transfer portal or incoming freshman. I'd like one of each preferably. Self does really well in the portal, we're getting multiple top 20 transfer portal guys each year it seems like.
Our rotation for next year is already taking shape. Peterson Elmarko Jamari Passmore Griffen Storr Bidunga all seem likely to be on the roster. And we are still in on several more big name freshman.
Re: Recruiting
if Griffen and Storr are both back i think that means we had a disappointing year.....for Kansas standards anyway
Just Ledoux it

Re: Recruiting
I don't know. It's a new era. If they're not first rounders, the money is better at KU.
Storr seems undersized for an NBA wing and not a good enough shooter to be a 2.
Griffen, maybe. His size and shooting make him more draftable.
Re: Recruiting
good point about a new era.
But yea, even before the new era, there could maybe be some in-between of being a good college player who's still just a year of development away from being an actual NBA product.
Ochai comes to mind.
Or, even some in-between of being not-quite NBA material, but still a helluva player, and now able to make the most of college now that you don't otherwise have to resort to overseas for compensation.
Hunter comes to mind.
the new era prob makes it more likely to stay in college tho either way.

Yes. No reason for a guy like HD to go pro where he will struggle when he can make more money (and have more fun while going to school in a college environment and getting an education) in college.BiggDick wrote: ↑Fri Nov 15, 2024 7:43 am good point about a new era.

It's November, so this is obviously a rush to judgment, but I don't see NBA players in Storr and Griffen yet.
Storr wouldn't have been drafted last year and he's done nothing to increase his stock this year. In fact, probably the opposite.
I think there is also something to be said about the success Och Jalen and Braun are having at the next level. Especially now that the pay gap is greatly decreased (and often times likely tips in favor of college at this point), guys coming in with more mature bodies and more basketball experience is a big advantage over the 1 and done youngins. In my opinion.
Obviously, there are exceptions and examples of it working both ways. Gradey is doing fine. Furphy however is buried on the bench on a team with multiple young guys at his position already ahead of him (Mathurin, Nemhard, Nesmith, Sheppard, etc.). How much is he going to improve this year? For $1.85 mil, but has to pay for his own food, lodging, bills, etc. I think for damn near equal money he could be at KU developing.
Re: Recruiting
Wait, could a dood like Furph actually get "damn near equal" the $1.85 mil he's making now, with all the stipends and NIL and stuff?
There's also the issue of "developing." I kinda get the feeling being able to focus 100% on hoops as an NBA player (even if he spends time in the G-league) is still a better developmental opportunity than having limits placed on time with coaches and trainers, and having to attend class. But I know that's a bummer take for a college hoops fan.
as for Hunter going pro, I dunno if he'd necessarily "struggle." Depends on the league. He may not even sniff the NBA. His trajectory seems more likely overseas, where the single biggest question to it is whether he could make more money there versus with NIL here. There's also considerations like whether he'd rather play in a mostly/completely full gym pretty much every game, versus potentially less dedicated fanbases in other leagues.

Re: Recruiting
Yes. Furphy could make close to that at KU. When you factor in no mortgage/rent and all the expenses associated with that. Free food. Free education. It'd be close enough. There are guys in college making more than Furphy is in the NBA.BiggDick wrote: ↑Fri Nov 15, 2024 8:31 am Wait, could a dood like Furph actually get "damn near equal" the $1.85 mil he's making now, with all the stipends and NIL and stuff?

I used to agree with your second point, I don't as much anymore. I have no idea how many classes these guys actually have to take anymore, but i haven't heard of anyone being academically ineligible in years. Yes, there are some limitations on coaching time, but I'm sure those rules are broken just like all the recruiting ones were when they existed. Plus, it's just official staff. There is no limit on the personal trainers these guys all use. CB Och and JW all used to post videos working out with a KC based hoops trainer. Especially now that money isn't an issue, I think these guys focus on basketball for the most part. I don't think school gets in the way. And the other side of that is that in the NBA you've got plenty of downtime too. Nobody forces you to do extra practice work with trainers. The best ones do, but there are plenty of part time fuck offs in the NBA who don't work as hard as the greats like Kobe MJ LeBron etc.
I don't think HD would have sniffed the NBA last year or the year before. Maybe he shows something this year, and/or maybe the success of Edey as a 20mpg bench guy so far for Memphis will convince me he can help someone in the NBA next year....but I still find it doubtful longterm. But he's probably made over $1mil last year and equal or more than that this year, which is more than I've made in my entire life so far, so he should be set financially.
Re: Recruiting
watch Hunter make the league only to get promptly nuts-to-faced dunked on by Braun.
that's a good point re: that KC-based hoops trainer. Maybe college players are allowed to just go find additional training on their own time.
And, college fan optimism, maybe there's something to be said for developing your skillset against comparatively inferior talent for a year for four, versus going up against the best ASAP.
I suppose Furphy's story is kind of a draft night bummer tho. Seemed expected to go first round, but slipped to early second anyway. Still signed a deal worth $8.5 mil, with over $6 mil guaranteed. If you can toe that kinda money, pretty sure it's still wisest to jump in with both feet.

Re: Recruiting
They 100% are allowed to work out as much as they want on their own time.
The current restrictions in college (that I am finding) are WITH STAFF present:
-no more than 4hrs of practice per day
-1 day off per week
-20hrs max practice per week (includes games, which count as 3hrs)
-offseason restrictions are stricter. 8hrs max practice per week, 2hrs direct contact with coaches, and 2 days off. But again, NBA has offseason too. Where nobody is holding your hand.
The weirdest one i see is 8hrs of sleep between practices minimum.
Re: Recruiting
right on.
If they can work out as much as they want (and as long as it's not like an official school coach or trainer, with whoever they want?), AND if stipend and/or NIL money allows them to afford an otherwise-private third party trainer, then yea I guess the sky's the limit.
as far as "how many classes these guys actually have to take any more," I haven't heard they have to take any less. Like it's incredibly rare any player who spends most/all of a 4-year run at a college does NOT graduate, right?
just found this from a couple years ago that suggests student athletes are graduating at record rates.
https://www.ncaa.org/news/2022/11/15/me ... rates.aspx
Granted, I think they get exceptions for missing class if they're on a team trip, and get access to tutors and academic help and such that other students may not.
But, as a whole, I'm pretty sure most student athletes are still actually fulfilling some academic obligation.

Storr reportedly got 1 million dollars so yea, Furphy, if he stayed, i'd put around that number.

AND i think Furphy with another year of growth has a better chance at a 2nd and 3rd contract in the NBA than he will if he stays stuck in Indy playing a dozen or so minutes per week, with almost no real practice time during the season.
Re: Recruiting
Yeah, there's no way any 5 star big is looking at Clemence as some sort of hurdle to minutes at KU. Bidunga is out there reminding these recruits that if you're better than the established guy that Self will give you the minutes.DeletedUser wrote: ↑Thu Nov 14, 2024 9:33 pmHe's been a disappointment.
