Furphy was here on a visa for educational purposes. So, he wasn't eligible for NIL from what I remember being discussed. There was lots of talk about that because the big guy from Purdue was from Canada and wasn't getting any NIL money... Could be wrong.

There's still LOTS of season to go. Storr is shooting 43% from three so far. If he stays anywhere remotely close to that, he will have shown enough to be drafted. I think the most important thing he needs to do is show that he can adjust to a new, more professional system at Kansas, can accept coaching and can play next to other good players without grinding the offense to a halt by not moving the ball. He'll learn or he won't. I trust Self will be able to get him on board and rolling. Storr is very talented, just need to get him pointing that talent in the right direction a bit more.

You are correct, Furphy was not eligible for NIL contracts per his Visa.

I mean, I guess?

I look around college basketball rosters, and I get to 30-40 better prospects than him in a hurry. Just going through top 25 and big conference schools. Not even considering overseas guys who we never hear of until draft night that go lotto.

There is more to making it to and staying in the NBA than being a very good college basketball player. I think he can be a really good college basketball player at KU for this year and next. His size athleticism and shooting is a dime a dozen at the next level. He's not elite in any of those categories.

Yeah, I would guess Furphy wouldn't have left if not for that rule

Furphy had bad luck. He risked it and it didn't work. He was projected to go late 1st. Had that happened, he didn't lose money and he didn't make a bad choice.

NIL may have shifted things that guys in that situation may be less likely to risk it. Take similar money to stay in college, be a star, and keep developing

This is a non issue that could be worked around with any Australian marketing company and an agreement with the boosters and the NIL collective.

There aren't any rules.

Our boosters/collective:
"So we'd like for you to explore the landscape for college athletes in Australia, we're going to send you all 50k right now, but if you find the right partner and it works out, we'll send you an additional 900k."

Marketing group:
"That sounds good. Do you have any recommendations for partners?"

"Well, yes, actually we might have a guy that could work."

I wonder exactly how the draft night cookie crumbled for Furphy.

If there were, say, 3 or 4 teams late in the first round who said "yea if you're still available we'll take you" then I think you gotta stay in the draft.

But, if like, some overseas doods we never hear of til draft night go lotto, which suddenly pushes back some other doods that that 3 or 4 times thought wouldn't be around any more but were higher on their draft bored than Furph, you just don't know.

I wonder what the test, then, should be for whether a dood should stay in the draft. I dunno if a guarantee is a guarantee until the ink dries. But I also dunno if it's worth coming back cuz like only 3 or 4 teams said they'd take you in the first.

oh, and BTW, I looked up the NBA rookie scale by draft pick. 18th, for instance, is actually worth a little over $9 mil. Even early 2nd round, Furphy inked a little over $6 mil guaranteed. I dunno if that's a big enough difference to justify putting off a year - given the "dollar today worth more," and especially given the difference is otherwise is $6 mil in-hand versus like a $1 mil NIL deal.

Clearly he wasn't told that. Since he was there and they passed.

This is why players have agents. If front offices continuously lie to players then your agent (if they are competent) will know that. But you can get a bad agent, who is either incompetent or decides he gets paid more to convince you to stay in the NBA draft. And then you end up with "i was told I'd be top 20, but I fell 15 more spots to 35"...which is a lot, considering there are only 60 picks.

This.

Adidas says "hey since your visa doesn't allow you to earn money in the US, we are going to send you to our Adidas summer camp in Australia to be a special guest camp counselor for a few days and thats how we'll get the NIL money to you...oh, and while you're there JBL Audio who sponsors a lot of other Jayhawk players is going to have you attend a marketing event for their new portable speaker that illy is going to listen to on the golf course".

Mass Street Collective could absolutely figure a way around it, you'd think.

18th pick is 9.5 million for the first 3 years.
14.5 for 4 years.
Almost every 1st round pick gets that 4th year picked up.
In addition, around 80% of lottery picks have had their 5th year picked up - that would be an additional 7.6 million - I don't have the numbers for just outside of lottery but I'd imagine it's well above half.

So, if 18th pick, extremely likely : 14.5 - 8.5 + 1 ( what he would have made at KU ) is 7 million dollars lost, if 4th year picked up, which again, extremely likely for a 1st round pick.

I know Edey talked about it publicly. So it's definitely a hurdle for the foreign players. But the NIL thing is so fluid, things may have changed since then.

Self also said he doesn't think they'll sign another high school kid. "We got the 3 we needed to get early"

So it'll be those 3 plus the returning guys. Then trying to complete the roster with some transfer portal additions
