Re: Diners Dive-Ins and Drives
One thing that amazes me about the PNW, the best breakfasts are NOT at breakfast places...but are actually in the diviest dive bars in town.

There are some small town rural bars I've encountered around Illinois that have good breakfast.Overlander wrote: ↑Mon Nov 25, 2024 4:15 pm One thing that amazes me about the PNW, the best breakfasts are NOT at breakfast places...but are actually in the diviest dive bars in town.

Re: Diners Dive-Ins and Drives
There are those all over.
It just amazes me that for the most part, breakfast oriented restaurants here suck.
But, I can grab a really good breakfast (and a shot of Jameson's) at a dimly lit bar.

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Re: Diners Dive-Ins and Drives
I think Lawrence breakfast places are highly overrated.
Lady bird is good, but so fucking expensive. The Roost and Milton’s are Meh at best.

The Roost is good.
Or, was in 2022, the last time I was there.
( though, often times, not worth the wait, i'll admit )

Re: Diners Dive-Ins and Drives
told you guys this thread is going hall!
haven't had breakfast in Lawrence in years. But good to know Miltons is still around. Didn't it change, or chance locations, or close then open again or something?
Last time I was there (when was the last time I was there? At least woke up there...I think April 2022) we tried to get into Perkins but line out the door, and late start to the morning anyway, so just ended up at one of the bbq joints on Iowa instead.
GOAT breakfast for me remains Sharky's in Fraser. Cuz why not have a beach-themed diner in the mountains?
The go-to is the "Feeding Frenzy"...chopped ham steak and cheddar omelette smothered in pork green chili, with potatoes and toast. If you wanna go big they'll sub the toast for pancakes.
Here's another important thing about diners: they get you in and out. It doesn't take long to cook potatoes and eggs, at least if you know what you're doing. Even if it's busy!
No need for breakfast to be like a 3 hour affair...unless you really want it to be, I guess which is why bottomless mimosas are a thing.

Re: Diners Dive-Ins and Drives
The menu is so small and not really creative at all.
I also believe that breakfast food place should inherently serve hash browns. They don’t. Ruck The Foost.

Re: Diners Dive-Ins and Drives
Of all the things from Colorado I miss the most….
green Chili as a standard menu option and add-on (topping) is #1.
Food wise, closely followed by Snarf’s (I’m sure I’ve mentioned that place on here before)
Re: Diners Dive-Ins and Drives
ugh, I don't like when a menu is not creative. And or limited options. Especially if the options are too creative.
There needs to be the standard eggs/potatoes/toast/pig, B&G, CFS, a few omelets, a few benedicts (not my thing but it is for others and I don't begrudge), pancakes and/or waffles and/or French toast. If they don't have all those things, they better have most.
I'm prob forgetting some things. But if places get too cute and don't offer those or deviate too much from those, breakfast can kinda suck.
Daily specials are a bonus.
Oh, and coffee! Espresso should be a thing but not necessarily, cuz hot black drip is the move. And I'd rather be annoyed with you trying to top me off too much, than have you not top me off enough.
Coffee is cheap, and if I was planning on drinking any less than like 3 or 4 cups, then I wouldn't have gone out for breakfast.

Re: Diners Dive-Ins and Drives
I kinda wish Pdub would put you in the hall (in timeout) every time you try to ‘tout’ something. And I like you. Most here don’t. (At least your persona).
Re: Diners Dive-Ins and Drives
Toast options should be white wheat sourdough, maybe even rye
plus stuff like an extra biscuit, English muffin, bagel, pastries, donut (FULL order too)

It's not a small menu for a breakfast/lunch spot ( there's like 20+ things you can order for breakfast ) but regarding what they have, sure, it's pretty much what you expect.Back2Lawrence wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 12:42 pm The menu is so small and not really creative at all.

I know, I realize that when I say that. But something about it seems limited. Or just not interesting.pdub wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 12:54 pmIt's not a small menu for a breakfast/lunch spot ( there's like 20+ things you can order for breakfast ) but regarding what they have, sure, it's pretty much what you expect.Back2Lawrence wrote: ↑Tue Nov 26, 2024 12:42 pm The menu is so small and not really creative at all.

Probably the fact that the one time I ate there I got ignored, not checked back on, and not told thanks at the end.

Re: Diners Dive-Ins and Drives
Ah, yea, I remember the service, as in the waitresses ( yes, i've never had a waiter there ) and hostesses ( also, never a host ), being pretty lackluster/dgaf.
Except one time when the waitress serving us was wisecracking about our hangovers. She was great.
I think the Kansan ( standard plate ) is tasty and good value.
I also think their Biscuits and Gravy are strong.
And there's a Bloody Mary they have on the menu that I order every time.

But as annoying as I am, I've still never even been so much as threatened with a time out...and that's even with PDub not always seeming to like me and/or my persona sometimes too.
Now, for real, green chili!
the Durango Diner's version brought me back to life one morning. The whole place is this very retro-vibe long skinny space with like 1 booth in the back but otherwise just diner stools along a counter facing the kitchen. The whole place is only like 8 feet wide.
The green chili is hot as fuck too, prob too hot, except it's exactly what the doctor ordered after a night of the Durango dives do a number...
