I’d guess a taco made with Dixon’s chili seasoning?

I'm embarrassed to say that I never made the effort to go to Dixon's in all the, (almost 30), years I lived in KC. Independence, Mo., for me, was a place you drove around or if necessary through, on your way to somewhere else, i.e., with maybe a couple of exceptions over all that time, it was never a destination. Also, chili isn't something I would go very far out of my way to pursue. Tacos? Definitely!

Glad KC is getting some love. Seems rather superfluous. They did mention KC tacos. My buddy and I documented about 20 years ago.

Thanks for sharing that. I wonder if we were ever in the same places at the same time?

I'm not positive, but 2006 might have been a little earlier than when japhy, Leawood, Rman, Geezer, et al, and I would meet somewhere for lunch on Saturdays. You would have fit right in. (That wasn't meant as an insult.) Occasionally minhen would join us, and Defixione and NotAPuke would make the pilgrimage over from Lawrence.

Hopefully japhe will have a better handle on exactly when that was, 2008-2010ish?, not to mention the names of some of the many different Mexican restaurants in KC, KS we tried over the years. Leawood could tell us, he seemed to have his finger on the pulse of the "authentic" Mexican dining scene.

The characterization in your article of "...guys who walked into the black bar in "Animal House"... It got quiet and everyone was looking at us... was played out regularly at the places Leawood directed us to meet, where we were frequently the only people who spoke English, including the staff. Often, no matter which restaurant we were eating at, the same group of ~ 3 guys would show up, one with a guitar, another with an accordion, and another with a harp it appeared he had fashioned out of the curved banister from a stairs, and they would serenade the eaters by playing and singing 3 or 4 songs, take requests, and hope to garner tips, before leaving to go to the next restaurant and repeat the process. Watching Rman order in Spanish was also part of the entertainment...

I checked Grinders website, seems their menu has changed. I remember rman railing on the tiger pizza.

I'm with Rman - the smell of that pizza could clear a room, it was so bad. japhy used to order it, not because he liked it, but just to annoy us.
