Keeping in mind of course that the Supreme Court has said that Trump can sell these things for cash and not only is he immune from consequences, his conduct is not even reviewable.

I started to post about that, but am not up to date with the thread and didn't want to make a "duplicate" post.

To me, the ability for Trump to bestow exemptions to his tariffs on the people, oligarchs, who suck up to him sufficiently, "It sure would be nice to get that $10 billion dollar contract with the pentagon for that missile contract...", as well as punish anyone who opposes him by withholding government business, is the real reason behind Trump's supposed inability to understand how tariffs will increase inflation, stunt growth, and effectively be a tax on the American people, whose spending amounts to ~ 70% of our GDP. But, he doesn't give a fuck about any of that because, what's in it for him?

It's (also) going to be so much more mundanely stupid than that. Your assorted petty tyrants - your Tom Callahans of the world - will call in their stupid favors to spare their brake manufacturing businesses (and so on) from the brunt of things.

It is possible that consumer prices will be lower next year than they are this year.

There is nothing - nothing whatsoever - about Trump’s stated policies and plans that could be expected to result in lower prices.

I will go so far as to say that the best thing Trump could do in order for prices to be lower next year than they are this year, is none of the things he has said he will do.

and, more directly...society has done a terrific job instilling terrible spending habits on each other, reinforcing the need for unnecessary items, chasing the glory of having the newest best model that the neighbor has, not being able to get good credit ratings without debt (stupid system) and most significantly...an underlying acceptance that all of us are in debt and the only way to get more stuff is to gonfuether in debt...to which the creditors happily oblige.


The financial institutions and sales culture have done a terrific job of convincing people that...although they can't afford a $1000 purchase....somehow it's easier and better and definetely affordable if they make that same purchase but pay $1500 for it over the next few months.
